Networking and Security

Our courses reflect the constantly expanding and evolving IT industry. This ensures you gain the most relevant knowledge and skills in planning, installing and maintaining computer networks as well as building internet/intranet infrastructure.

You will be equipped with the skills and knowledge to provide network support within an organisation and to design, install and manage networks and systems, including rectifying system faults, configuring IT components, network security and optimising system performance. You will also gain practical skills and knowledge on how to assess client needs in project management, email and gateway server deployment, security management, cloud services and e-business.

Cyber security in Australia is a small but fast growing sector of the IT industry and demand for cyber security services and jobs is expected to grow by 21 per cent according to Federal Government employment projections. This means that there is and will continue to be a growing demand for graduates with appropriate skills and knowledge.

North Metropolitan TAFE is offering qualifications in Cyber Security to meet the need for skilled personnel to help combat cyber threats to our businesses and services, our finances and our privacy and identity.

This course focuses on switching technologies and router operations that support small-to-medium business networks, including wireless local area networks (WLAN) and security concepts. You’ll perform basic network configuration and troubleshooting, identify and mitigate LAN security threats, and configure and secure a basic WLAN.

This course will help you on your way to CCNA Certification.

Gain these skills:
  • Work with routers, switches and wireless devices to configure and troubleshoot VLANs, Wireless LANs and Inter-VLAN routing.
  • Configure and troubleshoot redundancy on a switched network using STP and EtherChannel.

As a cyber security graduate, you could be a member of a team of security practitioners on the front line protecting the integrity of your company’s security perimeter and IT network. Cyber attacks on Australian networks are an ever-increasing threat to individuals, businesses and national security and there is currently a skills shortage in this very specialised sector of the IT industry. You'll gain insights into mitigation techniques that are key to tackling potential cyber attacks faced by modern industry by completing North Metropolitan TAFE's Certificate IV in Cyber Security.

Our Certificate IV in Cyber Security is a technician level qualification that will provide you with the knowledge and a comprehensive set of technical skills that will mean you are job ready and highly employable.

There are currently two study options for this course, On campus which is face-to-face, full-time and Combined (Online and on campus) which is delivered in the evenings.

The Combined (Online and on campus) study option is ideal for IT staff who want to upskill into a cyber security role or for the passionate cyber security enthusiast. 
New candidates with a limited background in IT should consider the On campus study option, or enrol for the Certificate III in Information Technology (Cyber Security) instead.

At our Joondalup campus we also offer you the opportunity to gain a dual qualification during your study. You can complete this qualification and an additional two units from ICT30120 Certificate III in Information Technology (Web Development), talk to staff when you enrol. (Approximate cost of additional units is $157.70 full fees, or $60.80 concession.)
