FAQs

Learning online can be a great way to get skilled — whether your life doesn't have room for going to classes, or you like the idea of a more flexible pace of learning.

Online learning works differently depending on the course you study – more information is available on the relevant course page - see our online course list below.

The assessment of your online units may involve:

  • video submissions to demonstrate your skills in the workplace or simulated environment (e.g. conducting a meeting or making a presentation)
  • attendance on campus to demonstrate skills in a simulated workplace environment or completion of a supervised assessment
  • participation in assessment activities via a live virtual classroom or simulated workplace environment
  • some courses require weekly or fortnightly online sessions using Blackboard Collaborate, Microsoft Teams, or Zoom
  • online submission of documentation based on workplace scenarios
  • voluntary or paid role in a business or community organisation, with responsibilities that allow you to demonstrate your skills and to have access to other important resources such as workplace documentation or real customers
  • completion of observation checklists or supervised assessments by an approved person in your workplace, e.g. a workplace supervisor with verified credentials

If you’re thinking of studying with us online, you’ll need access to the following:

  • Reliable broadband internet access
  • Headset with speakers and microphone (for interactive Collaborate or Teams or Zoom sessions)
  • Computer with ability to edit Word documents (.docx)
  • Computer with ability to view Adobe PDF files (.pdf)
  • Access to a video recording device with the capability to transfer to a computer/YouTube (e.g. iPhone or similar smartphone, or traditional video camcorder).

We’ll let you know if there are any specific software applications you need for your studies.

If you are concerned that your computer is not suitable, please contact us and we’ll let you know the exact requirements for your course.

To study online, you will need some basic computer skills, including the ability to use:

  • A computer mouse (or trackpad) and keyboard (non-expert typing is fine!)
  • The internet and know how to search the web
  • Office programs, Microsoft Word is the most used (but you'll have access to all the programs in Office 365 via a web browser once you're enrolled)
  • Email (you'll be provided with an email address to use in Office 365 once enrolled)
  • Discussion forums or blogs

If you have any concerns, contact us at enquiry@nmtafe.wa.edu.au and we can put you in touch with your course lecturer.

Some of the courses on the list below can be done completely online. However some of the courses require a practical component which can't be done online, or some may be a mix of online and on campus learning.

We’ll let you know what's required for your course.

Every few years course Training Packages are changed and updated to align with industry requirements.

This means that if you do not complete all the units within the current course by the end of the teachout period, there will be a requirement for you to transition into the newest version of your qualification, which potentially will require you to complete additional units and possibly pay extra fees. If you have any concerns or questions in relation to these changes, please contact the learning area for further information.

Specific course information

  • Each unit will require an average of 3-6 hours per week for learning and assessments.
  • A standard study period runs for 20 weeks, if you complete your units within the first 10 weeks of study you may be able to enrol in additional units in the next term intake.  This will allow you to complete your course in a shorter period of time.
The online delivery of the Certificate IV in Human Resource Management will be set out for you so you will be able to complete 3 units every 10 weeks, and achieve the whole course in 4 terms.
  • All courses have been structured so that students are able to complete the course within 2 years. Typically, online courses take longer to complete than on-campus courses because they are designed for students who need to learn flexibly while juggling other commitments in their lives.
  • All courses have a compulsory weekly or fortnightly,  1-2 hour online collaborate session where students will interact with their lecturer online.
  • Students are required to make satisfactory progress through their courses and complete their qualification within 2-3 years as training packages are constantly reviewed to keep abreast of industry changes.
  • Upon receipt of a successful application, applicants enrolling in a new course will be enrolled in Stage 1 of the course and continuing students will be enrolled in the next stage of their studies.
  • Please ensure you have supporting documentation if you are applying for a Diploma level qualification. This includes transcripts from a related Certificate IV or relevant work experience history. The Course Coordinator or Head of Programs may contact you to discuss your enrolment.

North Metropolitan TAFE Community Services online programs use a blended delivery model.  This means that not all of the course program will be taught in the online setting.  You will need to attend some face to face workshops to complete the assessment requirements of the program.  Some practical assessment is required and attendance at these is compulsory.

  • Each course is divided into six (6) month blocks which run over twelve (12) or eighteen months.  Commencement points are in February and July each year.
  • Students must pass each stage before progressing to the next stage.
  • You will be allocated a lecturer for each stage of your learning journey.
  • Students will be required to attend a compulsory orientation evening.
  • Our Certificate IV in Electrical - Instrumentation (UEE40411) is targeted at qualified electricians. It cost is approx. $1,500
  • You can enrol any time you like and will have 12 months from enrolment to complete the course.
  • Electrical apprentices can complete the course in their fourth year, then apply for the award after they receive their Certificate III or electrical licence.
  • In terms of duration, the course is 12-months long but is fully flexible, so you can complete quicker or slower (up to a year).  It is entirely up to you.
  • The learning material is online so you watch lectures, read the material provided and complete quizzes and assessments.
  • There is a practical component which takes around two weeks and is completed at our Midland campus, but once again this can be done at times that suit you.  You can do it in one two-week block, or one day a week, etc.
  • You can come and go at any time, except school holidays when we are closed. The assessment centre is only located at Midland campus.
  •  We also offer a PID Loop Tuning skillset as an option to those who are enrolling in UEE40411.
This course is optional, but will run seamlessly with the UEE40411 if you choose it.
It basically puts into practice all the work you will have done in the instrumentation course.
It generally takes another 2-3 days of practical work and it costs around $250.
