This course is a general introduction to the language, its sound and writing system.

Learn Chinese Mandarin

Our world is getting smaller due to the rapid development of telecommunication, the expansion of international trade and the ease of air travel. In this environment, Chinese can be counted as one of the most important languages to learn. Modern Standard Chinese is an official language of the United Nations.

Chinese is spoken by over one billion people in China as well as by millions of other people all over the world. The language is not so difficult to learn, having quite a simple structure, with no plural forms and no past or future tenses. China is the fastest growing economy in the world, with huge investments in the iron ore industry in Western Australia. For some years now, people with skills in Chinese have been in great demand both at home and overseas – especially in the areas of the service industry, in international and company law, economics, engineering and architecture.

Chinese (Mandarin) Beginners Stage 1  is a general introduction to the language, its sound and writing system and some general information on the countries in which it is spoken. Wherever possible, the course is tailored to meet the needs and interests of the group. Therefore, some variations to course may occur.

Design is a process that combines elements into a workable solution whether it be a logo, or an app interface and our concept development and ideation units have these foundation skills covered. Graphic Designers communicate through images and words and some units concentrate on an introduction to web and interface design, while other units cover conceptual and creative thinking skills.

The industry demands a mastery of typography, and you will begin this journey by having fun combining digital techniques with traditional Letterpress to learn the basics. Our industry also demands drawing and sketching skills to convey concepts to both clients and fellow designers and our drawing units, both traditional and digital, lay the foundation for further development in digital illustration required in the Diploma and beyond.

Advanced Diploma of Graphic Design

Further develop your graphic design skills and get ‘industry-ready’

You can choose from two streams - User Experience Design or Illustration and you'll work on live briefs with real clients. During this course you will develop a stunning portfolio which culminates in the end-of-year grad show attended by industry stakeholders. All students become members of the Australian Graphic Design Association (AGDA).

Add to your palette of graphic design skills

The Advanced Diploma produces ‘industry-ready’ graduates. Throughout the year, you will develop a stunning portfolio, culminating in the end-of-year graduation show.

The show is a highlight of the creative industry year and is attended by Perth’s best design agencies and studios, many of whom are North Metropolitan TAFE alumni. It is not uncommon for graduates to be offered employment on the night.

In the Advanced Diploma you can choose from two streams - User Experience Design or Illustration (UX/UI). This means that although everyone does the common core units there is the opportunity to specialise and build a portfolio tailored to your preferred area of design. Our industry consultation outlines the demand for illustrative design as well as a more User Experience/ User Interface approach.

We integrate live briefs, with real clients. An example of the high standard of work our students produce is our involvement with the International Society of Typographic Designers (ISTD) where our students have won international awards, along with our participation in Advertising Council Australia’s AWARD School, and the PADC Student Skulls. All students are eligible to become a member of the Australian Graphic Design Association (AGDA), the industry’s leading body. We also participate in the annual AGDA Folio Review, where students have the opportunity to get folio feedback direct from design professionals. We also facilitate industry visits and host expert guest speakers who share their views on the current and future picture of the creative industry.

This course is demanding, but the rewards and satisfaction are great. Many of our graduates go on to enrol into a degree in design and receive advanced standing at all WA universities. We have study pathways and agreements with Curtin University. See the ‘Further Study’ section below for more details.
