Western Australia’s engineering industry is very closely linked to the mining and construction industries. It covers diverse areas including fitters, machinists, boilermakers, sheetmetal workers, and refrigeration and air conditioning mechanics.

If you've always liked tinkering, inventing and building gadgets this course will help you get creating.

It is aimed at designing and building DIY electronic projects. You'll gain an understanding of electronic components and circuit theory together with microprocessor programming (via the popular Arduino microcontroller).

You'll cover the basics of building these circuits, helping you on your way to success in the DIY electronics world.

This short course will run for 2 hour sessions over 6 Wednesdays, from 6:00 - 8:00pm.

You'll be trained in the use of the FCAW welding process to be able to manufacture and assemble your projects at home.

Begin by gaining the skills to recognise hazards and use welding equipment safely and learn about welding terminology and defects. You will receive demonstrations and guidance on correct technique and the opportunity to develop your FCAW skills over the duration of the course. You will be required to wear personal protective clothing/equipment at all times which includes steel capped safety boots, clear safety glasses, long drill cotton pants and cotton drill long sleeve shirt.

The Type B appliance gas licensing system and the gasfitting work that can be carried out under each type of licence can be confusing.

North Metropolitan TAFE’s Gas Awareness for Managers is designed to give managers an understanding of the Licensing system, the Regulations and the responsibilities of the licensed gasfitter and the consumer (owner of the Type B appliance).

We deliver this course at our Midland Campus, or onsite, subject to group size.

  • The control of all gasfitting work; the Regulations and Act enforced by

If you are looking to add a Gas Authorisation Category 2 qualification to your existing trade or engineering qualifications, complete North Metropolitan TAFE's 10 day course and you'll be able to service and maintain Type B gas appliances. This course will give you the skills you need to gain Gas Authorisation (Category 2) from Energy Safety WA.

If you have already successfully completed the appropriate two day supervised gas fitter course within two years of enrolling in this course then you will only need to complete an additional eight days of training.

You'll cover details such as:

  • legislation
  • OH&S
  • gas and system components
  • tools and equipment
  • electrical and gas safety and isolation procedures
  • plans and diagrams
  • testing and servicing equipment

Successful completion of this two day course will mean you can carry out gas fitting work under the supervision of a Supervising Gasfitter.

North Metropolitan TAFE’s Gasfitter Supervised course meets the ‘Training Plan’ requirements set by EnergySafety WA that all supervised gasfitters should complete before they begin gasfitting work.  This course is a pre-requisite to the eight day training program for Gas Authorisation Category 2, from EnergySafety WA.

With this Geological Assistant skill set you'll gain the skills and knowledge needed to seek employment in entry level geological assistant roles in either exploration, pit or underground environments as well as other entry level mining roles.

The units covered will be delivered in two clusters or groups:

Geological Field Assistance (4.5 hours per week)

  • RIIEGS303D Provide geological field assistance

Field and Mining Techniques (12 hours per week)

  • CPPSIS3016A Provide field support
  • RIISTD202D Collect routine site samples
  • RIIEGS202D Conduct fieldwork

To have the best chance of finding a job in the mining industry we recommend that you undertake this skill set concurrently with North Metropolitan TAFE's RII305115-SS-C Mining Field Operations skill set.

Please note a compulsory 4-day camp on an exploration site forms part of the requirements for completion of the Geological Assistant skill set. To attend this camp you need to have successfully completed or be in the process of completing the Mining Safety units covered in RII305115-SS-C Mining Field Operations skill set.

We strongly advise that you obtain a manual driver's licence to increase your employability in the mining industry and also recommend that you complete the two day 4WD driving course North Metropolitan TAFE offers (RII305115-SS-A Operate and maintain a four wheel drive vehicle).  This particular course gives you an introduction to 4WD driving.

EAA33 Install, Commission & Service Type B Gas Appliances Skill Set Skill set On campus

Be eligible for a Class I Permit or high level Authorisation from Energy Safety WA

If you:

  • Hold a current authorisation, or
  • Have completed the Supervised Gasfitter and Authorisation Courses within the last 2 years, or
  • Have trade or engineering qualifications

then this course will enhance your existing skills. Successful completion of the unit, CPCPGS4023B Intall, commission and Service Type B Appliance, will equip you to service, maintain, rectify faults, recommission, install and commission Type B gas appliances.

Gain these skills
  • Access, analyse, interpret and confirm through a detailed site inspection, design specification for Type B gas appliance to be installed and commissioned
  • Liaise with designer and gas authorities to resolve design specification matters requiring clarification
  • Obtain formal authority to proceed with installation and commissioning before commencing work, in accordance with regulatory and code of practice requirements
  • Plan tasks in conjunction with others involved in, or affected by work
  • Identify and follow quality assurance requirements for work sequences
  • Prepare work area to support efficient installation, commissioning and servicing of Type B gas appliance
  • Install appliance components, including valve trains, burners and associated pipe work and flue systems, in accordance with approved design specifications
  • Install electrical components, including terminations, in accordance with design specifications and regulatory requirements

  • Visually inspect installations at each stage of work to ensure compliance with specifications and absence of damaged or faulty equipment and materials

Mining Law exams comprise one aspect of the requirements to gain a WA Certificate of Competency in any of the following appointments

  • Restricted Quarry Manager
  • Quarry Manager 
  • First Class Mine Manager
  • Underground Supervisor

This two day Mining Law exam preparation course will provide you with the required key aspects of Mines Safety and Inspection Act 1994 and Mines Safety Inspection Regulations 1995
Also provided are Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DMIRS) application forms, exam tips, mock examinations and marking guides.

North Metropolitan TAFE also offers one to one tuition with a qualified Quarry Manager on request.  There is an additional cost for this delivery option.

EAA52 Operate & Maintain a 4WD Skill Set Skill set On campus
East Perth

If you are looking for work at a mine site or you are already working onsite, or simply want to broaden your skillset we can help you gain the basic skills to drive and maintain a 4WD in an environment beyond the city streets.

This one and a half day four wheel driving course will introduce you to the vehicle skills you need to work in many different industries including the geological and mining industries. This course will give you time behind the wheel and prepare you for routine and emergency situations while operating a 4WD vehicle. You'll start at our East Perth campus before going to experience some four wheel drive tracks on the outskirts of Perth.

A manual drivers licence is a prerequisite for this course.

You'll need to wear steel capped boots, a hat, long sleeved shirt and long pants. On the first day you'll be able to buy food and drink in and around our East Perth campus, on the second day you will need to bring your own lunch and water bottle.

On successful completion of this course you will receive a Statement of Attainment for RII30515-SS-A (RIIVEH305E) Operate and Maintain a four wheel drive vehicle.
