Community Engagement Skill Set

Enhance your skills to be able to develop, implement and evaluate a community engagement project. 

You will gain the foundation theories and practices to develop, deliver and evaluate community engagement projects. 

This online skill set touches on the key principles of community engagement. It introduces key skills required to deliver best practice community engagement projects, including stakeholder research and analysis, engagement planning, group facilitation and project evaluation. Strongly influenced by current industry trends, this skill set encourages participants to reflect on their own practice, trial new approaches and stretch their capabilities through the introduction of best practice methods. 

This online course has been developed by those in industry, for industry. The course structure and content has been designed to suit those working full-time or part-time in a community engagement role or in a role that seeks community involvement in decisions regarding projects/programs/initiatives. 

Participants may work across a range of social, environmental, health, recreation, arts and culture sectors; within or for government, not-for-profit or private organisations. 

Successfully completing this skill set gives you the opportunity to further your studies by enrolling in the Certificate IV in Community Development or the Diploma of Community Development, you can discuss this with your lecturers. 

  • Understanding the principles of contemporary community engagement
  • How to develop a community engagement plan
  • Understanding of key practices required to deliver a community engagement plan, including group facilitation skills
  • How to evaluate a community engagement plan

I have the following attributes: 

  • Currently working full-time or part-time in a community engagement role or in a role that seeks community involvement in decisions regarding projects/programs/initiatives.
  • Lead worker for community engagement projects
  • Able to reflect on your own practice
  • Good organisational and time management skills to complete online learning and assessment tasks in their own time
  • Participants need to be employed in a role that includes a moderate level of community engagement work to complete this skill set.  
  • Participants will need to have taken a lead role in designing, implementing, and evaluating a workplace project within the last two years (or within the course timeframe) that involves them:  
    • designing an engagement plan with community members and with management within their organisation. 
    • providing information to community members and stakeholders about a project/program/topic/initiative.  
    • seeking information/feedback from community members and stakeholders regarding that same project/program/topic/initiative.  
    • facilitating group discussions between community members and stakeholders focused on the same project/program/topic/initiative. 
    • seeking feedback from community members and stakeholders relating to the evaluation of the workplace engagement project and compiling an evaluation report. 

This skill set delivery will be made up of:

  • two x 2 hour online interactive Collaborate workshops covering theory, 9.30am - 11.30am
  • self-paced learning using resources provided in Blackboard (learning management system)
  • assessment work to be completed in your own time
  • online assessment support with the Lecturer (optional), 11.30am - 12.30pm

You will commence the skill set by attending both the online collaborative workshops (dates below). You will then complete assessment tasks using online resources and a work-related project that you are currently working on or have recently completed. Lecturers will be available to assist with finalisation of assessment tasks via two online drop-in sessions.

Orientation information will be sent to students prior to Workshop 1. In this information all the workshops and session dates as well as assessment deadlines will be outlined. You will need to review this information before attending workshop 1.

  • Semester 1 2024 - Tuesdays, 23 & 30 April
  • Semester 2 2024 - Tuesdays, 10 & 17 September
