Expand your business skills and learn to build effective relationships

Completion of this course will give you the necessary skills needed to manage effectively in a flexible, agile environment and lead and support employees with changing expectations.  

Learning takes place in classrooms, computer labs and our simulated business, giving you the opportunity to put your skills into practice. In our simulated business, you will use effective leadership skills and technology to manage, lead and develop teams. You will apply strong communication skills as you liaise with diverse stakeholders, and use project management skills to meet deadlines and budgetary requirements.  Thinking critically and analytically you’ll solve business problems with a focus on achieving goals and objectives, and implement strategies and processes based on findings from analysing financial and operational information.

In the meantime the information below provides an indication of the time commitment required to complete this course, depending on available study options. The course is designed to balance formal learning and practical application of skills.

This course consists of 12 units which, when delivered full-time on campus, will take 1 semester (6 months).

On campus

Learning takes place in classrooms, computer labs, our simulated workplace based in Perth and online.
Where computers are an essential part of the training, classes will be scheduled in a computer lab.
When timetabled in the Simulated Workplace, students are required to bring their own laptops (referred to BYOD - Bring Your Own Device).

A typical week for a full-time load includes:

  • 4 days of classes per week
  • Classes start at either 8:30am or 9:00am and finish between 4:30pm - 5:00pm  (earlier on Friday)
  • Classes will be delivered both on campus and online at specified times – this provides you with the opportunity to develop working-from-home skills

The course is available part-time, and will involve 2 - 3 days on campus. You will be enrolling in 6 of 12 units each semester, taking you a minimum of one year to complete the course. Other part-time options may be possible, please discuss this with staff.

Online

This will be fully online with a focus on self-directed online learning and assessment materials, supported with online lectures and meetings. To guide your progress, your lecturers will provide a learning and assessment plan (LAP) that outlines sessions, activities and assessment due dates. Lecturers will be available to answer questions during business hours, and at other times by appointment.

Online delivery can take up to three years to complete, depending on your other commitments. Please note that if you are unable to complete units when they are offered, it is likely to delay your course completion, or a new version of the course may be released necessitating transfer of credits.

To complete the course within 18 months, you'll need to:

  • Attend regularly to scheduled online sessions
  • Spend 4 - 6 hours per week individual study
  • Complete 4 units per semester (6 months)

To spread the course over three years, you'll need to:

  • Attend regularly to scheduled online sessions
  • Spend approximately 2 - 3 hours per week individual study
  • Complete 2 units per semester (6 months)
At-home study

Study outside of class hours, including private study, assignment preparation, and research will be required to successfully complete your course.

    Bring your own device (BYOD) is encouraged but not essential. If you don’t have access to a computer and WiFi at home, we recommend using our library computers during library hours.

    As a student you will also have additional costs associated with your study, for example text books and stationery, printing and other materials required for your assignments.

    Successful completion of this Diploma of Business will meet university minimum entry requirements and you may also gain credits for relevant study.

    North Metropolitan TAFE has an articulation agreement with Edith Cowan University (ECU) and successful completion of this Diploma of Business will make you eligible for 120 credit points or 8 units or 1 year of credit/recognition of prior learning (CRPL)/advanced standing into ECU's W23 Bachelor of Commerce.
