Do you want to make a difference in other people’s lives? Allied health assistants work with a range of clients to improve quality of life.

This course covers a broad range of units to provide you with the skills necessary to seek employment as as an allied health assistant (AHA).

You may find employment in both public and private health settings such as hospitals and community rehabilitation, aged care facilities, schools, mental health clinics, private practices and not for profit organisations.

You will learn how to work with children, adults and older people with a range of physical disabilities, mental health conditions, developmental delays, communication difficulties and/or social disadvantage, all done with the knowledge of safe work practices, legal and ethical considerations and current industry standards.

You will gain the required knowledge and skills through classroom discussions, simulation activities and workplace learning. Then you will undertake four weeks of full-time placement which North Metropolitan TAFE organises for you via our range of industry partners. Online learning makes up a small part of the course delivery but you will also have access to online resources to reinforce classroom learning.

You will have access to a team of allied health professionals who are able to share their experiences and support your learning throughout the course.

Some students have gone on to study allied health degrees at university after this course has ignited their passion.

Build on your Auslan skills to open up employment opportunities

This diploma will provide you with the skills to use Auslan in a range of specialised, complex and technical workplace exchanges across personal, learning, employment, social and community contexts. You will be able to gain employment in a role requiring knowledge of Auslan and use your skills in a wide range of contexts.

The Diploma of Auslan builds on Certificate IV in Auslan and provides a greater opportunity for employment in a role requiring Auslan comprehension.

Fine tune your automotive career

You will be required to complete the Certificate III in Automotive Electrical Technology when you are employed as an apprentice automotive electrical technician. This course will give you a broad range of skills and knowledge to work effectively in the automotive industry servicing, diagnosing and repairing electrical systems and components in a range of vehicles.

The Building and Construction industry is one of the largest employers in Australia. Due to the successful mining resource sector, increasing economic activity and migration to Australia from overseas, there is currently a massive shortage of residential homes, apartments, and commercial buildings. This has led to huge demand for qualified tradesmen and Apprentices in all trades.

North Metropolitan TAFE's exciting new mortar trades course is perfect for those not sure of which trade is for them. You'll cover bricklaying, wall and floor tiling, solid plastering and wall and ceiling fixing.

Offered at our Balga and Clarkson campuses, you'll gain an introduction to each of the above trades. You can then decide which trade pathway to choose, and the relevant lecturer will help organise work placement with a qualified employer which can lead to an Apprenticeship and the start of a successful and rewarding career.

Construction pathway courses lead to lifelong learning where on completion of an apprenticeship, you can complete further training and progress to become a Builder, Supervisor, Scheduler, Estimator, Trade Lecturer, or many other Construction careers.

Painting and decorating is known as a finishing trade, encompassing both residential and commercial areas. It can include new constructions as well as restoring historically significant buildings.

Solid plastering is a finishing trade and an important part of the building process. Solid Plasterers apply decorative and protective coverings of plaster and cement to the interiors and exteriors of structures.

Learn how to be a finisher

Be someone who has an integral role in the completion of a building. Get the training you need to assist with the internal finishes of a building.

You'll learn how to erect scaffolding and work safely at heights to fix standard plasterboard sheets and paper-based cornices.

Once completed some units from this course can be used as credit towards the CPC31211 Certificate III in Wall and Ceiling Lining.

Wall and floor tilers may work internally and externally over a variety of surfaces - vertical, horizontal, sloping or curved. They prepare surfaces and apply tiles for decoration and protection.

Gain advanced skills in the design and drafting of engineering plans to Australian and New Zealand standards and you could be working on local, interstate or international engineering projects.

This comprehensive qualification in civil and structural engineering could see you working on projects ranging from skyscrapers to intricate road designs.

This course will extend your study of the design and construction of civil works like dams, structures and pipe networks that is covered in the Diploma course.

While the emphasis is on producing working drawings for civil works which are used to communicate the engineers designs to the workers involved in constructing the works, you can participate more in the design decisions that are made.

You will learn a range of engineering drafting standards and receive exposure to CAD programs selected from autocad, Revit and 12D. You will extend your ability to address technical issues beyond what is achieved in the Diploma course.

This course will introduce you to the community services industry. You'll gain the essential theoretical knowledge and practical skills to work with people in a community or health setting by completing this qualification.

General Education Dual Qualification for Adults

North Metropolitan TAFE is excited to be offering this course as part of a dual qualification designed specifically for adults (18 years and over) who want to improve their reading, writing and employability skills. On successful completion of the program, you'll gain a Certificate II in Community Services and a Certificate II in General Education for Adults. The Maths and English covered in the Certificate II in General Education for Adults is approximately equivalent to Year 10 level and when successfully completed this course will meet the entry requirements for most Certificate III TAFE courses or employment.

It will advance your opportunity to further your studies and open the door to a career in community and health services.

This entry level course is ideal for support workers, case workers and client contact officers; generally, positions with direct contact with clients, providing  day-to-day support.

All of our Community Service qualifications have flexible training delivery modes and the option to study on the job. This means you get the most relevant skills and the opportunity to form industry contacts.

You'll also be mentored by attentive and caring lecturers who have extensive experience in the industry.

Complete this qualification and you could be working in community services, case management or social housing, involved in the managing, co-ordinating and/or delivering of person-centred services to individuals, groups and communities.

You will have specialised skills in community services and work autonomously under broad directions from senior management, providing direct support to individuals or groups. You may also have responsibility for the supervision of other workers and volunteers and/or case management, program coordination or the development of new business opportunities.

All our community service qualifications have flexible training delivery modes and the option to study on the job. This means you get the most relevant skills and the opportunity to form industry contacts.

Graduates of our Diploma in Community Services course meet entry requirements for and can even achieve advanced standing in relevant university degrees, see information about Murdoch University in the Further Study section below. As this qualification is one of the Lower fees, local skills half price courses, training at North Metropolitan TAFE will reduce the time and money you spend completing a relevant university degree and you'll be equipped to work in the industry while you study.

Get started on your career as a horticulturalist

This qualification will provide you with the practical skills and knowledge to gain employment in the conservation and ecosystem management industry including weed management companies, native revegetation nurseries, local councils, and mining, horticulture and landscaping organisations.

You do not need to have any prior experience and this may be a great option if you are currently unemployed. All of our classes have extensive resources and are run by highly experienced lecturers. 

You may be able to attain a triple qualification, adding the Certificate II in Horticulture and Certificate II in Landscaping to this Certificate II in Conservation and Ecosystem Management by enrolling in additional units.

If you’ve ever thought about being a part of this essential profession then this is the perfect qualification to get you started.

As a Dental Assistant, you will be responsible for preparing the surgery, assisting the dentist chairside, processing and sterilising all of the instruments and cleaning the surgery. You will also develop skills in reception work and the management of supplies.

On successful completion of your Certificate III in Dental Assisting, you will have skills and experience relevant to current industry standards, trends and practices.

From semester 2, 2023, North Metropolitan TAFE's Dental courses are located within our newly fitted out dental department at our conveniently located Leederville campus.

As a part of this qualification, you will have the opportunity to take part in work placements at private dental practices, other dental organisations or at the OHCWA, giving you real experience in the industry in both privately run and government facilities.

Employer-based delivery (part-time)
If you are a Dental Assistant currently working chairside in a dental surgery, you may be able to complete this course by studying part-time, attending classes one day per week and incorporating workplace assessments. You will need the support of your employer to be eligible.

Are you ready to advance your dental assisting career?

The Certificate IV in Dental Assisting is ideal for qualified dental assistants who are looking to upskill, diversify, and be able to further assist the dentist within the dental practice.

On successful completion of this course you'll gain specialist skills and knowledge to construct dental models, fabricate Thermoformed appliances and take clinical photographs. You'll also learn additional sterilisation techniques and gain increased insight into practice administrative processes.

From semester 2, 2023, North Metropolitan TAFE's Dental courses are delivered in our newly fitted out Dental department at our conveniently located Leederville campus.

Students will need to provide evidence of current employment, as there is a requirement for evidence of 250 workplace hours to be collected.

Does your career pipe dream involve laying real pipes?

You will gain the knowledge and skills to work effectively in the construction industry, install drainage systems, read plans, calculate quantities, concreting and rendering, and workplace health and safety.

Our Balga Campus is a major centre in WA for training in the building and construction industries, with purpose-built workshops, up-to-date equipment, and lecturers who maintain close links with industry.

Become instrumental in maintaining high tech control systems

Are you a qualified tradesperson with an electrical trade background? If so this course will give you the practical skills and knowledge to be employed as an instrumentation and control technician. You will undertake both theoretical and practical training.

The theoretical component is online whilst the practical components can be completed at our Midland campus, in a single 2 week block - dates are listed in the timetable tab below. Or the course can be spread out over 6 months to suit your schedule. This course costs approximately $700 if you enrol in the units outlined in the important information tab but please note fees are subject to change.

It is possible to enrol in the Proportional Integral Derivative Skill Set concurrently and we will help you manage the order of completion of subjects so that you can achieve the pre-requisite units before commencing the PID program.

Graduates can continue their studies in a metal fabrication apprenticeship. Metal fabricators and welders work in a diverse trade, applying a broad range of fabrication and welding skills to industries including, rail transport infrastructure and maintenance, mechanical and civil engineering, mining resources sector, heavy haulage and road transport, agriculture machinery, construction, defence, refineries and materials bulk handling.

Our pre-apprentices are exposed to the latest technological developments in the fabrication and welding trade.

Gain the heavy-duty qualification you need for a job in the metal trades

If you enjoy working with your hands, are physically fit and able to visualise how an object should look from a drawing, you may have the aptitude for working as a fabricator. Fabricators work in either a domestic or commercial setting making roofing products, air-conditioning ducts, electrical switchboards, hospitality equipment such as range hoods and benchtops; and you may specialise in stainless steel custom fabrication using the latest welding and polishing processes.

Once qualified you may find work in a broad range of industries including, rail transport infrastructure and maintenance, mechanical and civil engineering, mining resources sector, heavy haulage and road transport, agriculture machinery, construction, defence, refineries and materials bulk handling.

Technicians who work in Industry 4.0 sectors are required to be skilled in multiple disciplines.

To be able to competently repair and maintain equipment you will need knowledge and skills in the following areas:

• Networking - Including both wireless and cabled networks that incorporates the principles of cyber security
• Data Collection and Predictive Analysis
• Electronics - You may be required to repair and fault-find sensitive electric equipment
• Electrical - You will need to be able to understand the electrical concepts incorporating safety and licensing issues

You will learn about current approaches to mental health that focus on the person not the illness. The Diploma of Mental Health will enable you to undertake community service work that includes mental health.

Working in the community services industry you will provide services to clients in relation to mental health issues that may include case management, referral, advocacy, individual support, and education/health promotion services.

This course will provide you with a customised program in learning support to prepare you for roles such as an education assistant working in a school. You will learn to provide support to students in their learning and development from kindergarten to Year 12 under the guidance of a teacher.

As part of this qualification you will undertake a supervised work placement where you will be able to apply the skills and knowledge you have learned in a classroom setting. Students are required to obtain a Working with Children Check and a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check (Education Department WA) before attending the work placement. 

You have the opportunity to complete the Certificate III in School Based Education Support through full-time study on campus over 6 months (or you may choose to complete it part-time over 12 months). There is also an online option delivered over 12 months. This course will further develop your skills by teaching you how to operate sophisticated surveying equipment and software for conducting more complex engineering surveys, including road design and set out surveys and more complex surveying tasks.

This Diploma has a focus on geodetic surveying including how to conduct geodetic surveys and perform computations. You will also develop industry-specific skills including how to design basic engineering structures and plan spatial data collection. A large selection of electives is available, such as producing maps for land management purposes, producing mine drawings and how to set out stormwater systems.

When you complete this Diploma, you will be eligible for an Associate membership of the Surveying and Spatial Sciences Institute (Engineering and Mining Commission).
