Do you have a desire to work in construction working with timber?

Carpenters and joiners construct, install, renovate and repair structures and fixtures made of wood, plywood, wallboard and other materials, and cut, shape and fit timber parts to form structures and fittings.

When you complete this pre-apprenticeship you'll be what employers are looking for as an apprentice carpenter and joiner. Give yourself a better chance of gaining an apprenticeship and a flying start in learning a trade.

Half-price

This qualification is directly aligned with priority industry areas where jobs are today, and into the future. As part of the state government Lower fees, local skills program, through to 31 December 2025 you'll only pay half the tuition fees (plus resource fee) capped at $1,200; or $400 if you're aged 15—24 or eligible for a concession.

If this course is deemed competitive, you will be informed during your application via TAFE Admissions and additional entrance requirements will apply.

OLNA or NAPLAN 9 Band 8 C Grades in Year 10 English and Maths or equivalent Certificate I or Certificate II

In line with the Department of Education's Alternatives to full-time schooling policy, to study this course starting in:

  • Semester 1 - you need to have turned 15 years old by January 31.
  • Semester 2 - you need to have turned 15 years old by June 30.

You'll be able to access your personal timetable (find out how on our Timetables page), once you have paid your fees. 

Study outside of class hours, including private study, assignment preparation, and research will be required to successfully complete your course.

Bring your own device (BYOD) is encouraged but not essential.
If you don’t have access to a computer and WiFi at home, we recommend using our library computers during library hours.

As a student you will also have additional costs associated with your study, for example text books and stationery, printing and other materials required for your assignments.

Completion of this course will improve your chance of getting a carpentery and joinery apprenticeship.

Successful completion of this qualification provides you with the opportunity to become an apprentice in the building and construction industry, but you need to be registered with the The Apprenticeship Office and employed.
