Land a lead role in conservation

This qualification will provide you with the practical skills and knowledge to coordinate and supervise operations in your chosen field of Conservation and Ecosystem Management.

As part of this course you will undertake three units that have been designed to meet the Department of Health requirements to gain a Pest Management Technician Licence to control weeds and other minor pests in lawns and gardens, landscaping, bushland or minesite rehabilitation.

All of our classes have extensive resources and are run by highly experienced lecturers.

You may be able to attain a dual qualification, adding the Certificate IV in Horticulture to this Certificate IV, by enrolling in additional units.

This qualification will allow you to develop a broad range of industry skills and knowledge including:

  • Plan the implementation of revegetation works
  • Conduct a site inspection for ecological restoration
  • Develop procedures to minimise risks in the use of chemicals
  • Define the pest problem
  • Sample soils and interpret results
  • Maintain Work Health and Safety processes
  • Control weeds
  • Transport, handle and store chemicals
  • Prepare and apply chemicals to control weeds, pests and diseases

While there are no formal entrance requirements or prerequisites it is strongly recommended that:

  • Applicants have at least two years experience within the industry, or
  • Have completed Certificate III in Horticulture, Conservation or Landscape Construction, or equivalent

Attendance in class
You will be required to attend campus 3.5 - 4 days per week from 8:30am - 3:00pm from week 1 through to week 20 when studied full time in one semester.

Study and knowledge assessment can be completed in an online learning environment, but skills assessment will be completed on campus.

The course will be delivered using full time scheduling; however, part time students are able to participate within these sessions. 

At-home study
You will need to allocate approximately 1- 2 hours of study outside your structure classroom hours per unit
per week, for undertaking research and assignment completion.

North Metropolitan TAFE provides students with access to all learning and assessment materials through the Blackboard learning platform that can be accessed any time.

There is no mandatory work placement requirement however, volunteer work outside of formal class is encouraged.

Study outside of class hours, including private study, assignment preparation, and research will be required to successfully complete your course.

You will need a Wifi-enabled laptop (capable of word processing etc). Enrolled students will have access to Office 365.

As a student you will also have additional costs associated with your study, for example text books and stationery, printing and other materials required for your assignments.

This course meets the requirements of a broad range of related industries such as Local Councils, conservation and ecosystem management, landscaping companies, State Government employment and parks and gardens. Job titles may include:

  • Landcare Supervisor
  • Conservation Worker
  • Weed Management Supervisor
  • Lands, Parks and Wildlife Park Ranger
