Our English programs are designed to help adults from non-English speaking backgrounds to learn or improve English skills. We will help you reach the English language level that will allow you to pursue advanced studies, find employment and become an active member of our community.
You will learn skills in reading, writing and listening within the context of living in Australia and gain greater insight into Australian culture and society.
North Metropolitan TAFE offers a range of study options for students wishing to learn English, including Certificate courses and Skill Sets.
Students can study on campus (face-to-face) classes or flexi (online) classes. Please note, flexi delivery is only available for the following qualification:

This course is for people from non-English speaking backgrounds and will help you to develop English language speaking, listening, reading and writing skills for everyday use.
Increase your confidence and develop your English language skills
This course is for people from non-English speaking backgrounds.
The Certificate I in EAL (Access) will help you to develop English language speaking, listening, reading and writing skills for everyday personal and social situations. The course electives will give you relevant social, settlement and numeracy skills and knowledge.
This course aims to improve your academic skills to undertake further training and education, and increase your employment opportunities.

Certificate II in EAL (Access)
Do you speak a language other than English at home?
You will learn to develop your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills and boost your confidence in using English every day. You will be enrolled in the correct level based on your English knowledge.

You will be enrolled in the correct level based on your English knowledge.
To successfully complete the Certificate II in EAL (Access) you'll need to enrol in all 5 core units plus 3 of the 4 elective units listed in the Units tab below.

Certificate III in EAL (Access)
Use English every day with confidence
This course will further develop your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills and boost your confidence in using English. You will be enrolled in the correct level based on your English knowledge.

Certificate IV in EAL (Access)
Further develop your English language skills
This course covers speaking, listening, reading and writing in English and will enable you to access a range of community options for further education or employment.
Improve your English for further education or employment
This course will further develop your English language speaking, listening, reading and writing skills to enable you to access a range of community options which may require some specialisation. It will enable you to participate effectively in the community, including leadership roles.
Certificate II in EAL (Employment)
Learn how to create your own fashion designs
Learn sewing skills, how to read and alter patterns, how to create your own clothes and the language of sewing and design.
Learn how to create your own fashion designs
In this 12 month course you will learn sewing skills, how to read and alter patterns, and how to create your own clothes. You will also learn the language of sewing and design.
When you finish the Certificate II in EAL (Employment) you will be ready for gaining employment using English, or for further study in the fashion field.
Certificate III in EAL (Employment)
Build on your English language skills for work
We offer four intakes per year for this course and you will be enrolled in the appropriate level based on your English skills.

When you finish the Certificate III in EAL (Employment) you will be ready for gaining employment using English.
You can start this course in February and July. You will be enrolled in the correct level based on your English knowledge.

This skill set focuses on analysing and participating in complex conversations in an employment or professional setting.
North Metropolitan TAFE is running specialist skill sets for migrant professionals who wish to improve their English listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.
If English is not your first language, and you are a migrant professional looking to improve your skills or develop greater confidence in workplace English, our skill sets will help you achieve your goal.
This skill set focuses on analysing and participating in complex conversations in an employment or professional setting. As a professional there are many occasions where you will have to listen to, understand, analyse and participate in complex conversations and discussions and you'll gain the skills needed to help you do this.
You'll gain confidence and feel more comfortable when taking part in workplace discussions and meetings, improving your employment and promotion prospects.

This skill set focuses on developing your English language analysis skills to be able to review and refine written and spoken material in a further study context.
North Metropolitan TAFE is running specialist skill sets for migrant professionals who wish to improve their English listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.
If English is not your first language, and you are a migrant professional looking to improve your skills or develop greater confidence in workplace English, our skill sets will help you achieve your goal.
This skill set will focus on developing your English language analysis skills to be able to review and refine written and spoken material in a further study context. It will involve a review of grammar from phoneme to sentence level in both writing and speaking.

This skill set is designed to improve your English language skills to effectively participate in a range of straightforward interactions at work. You will develop your speaking and listening skills so you can take part in formal and casual conversations that may involve some specialised or technical language.
Completion of this skill set and the Reading and Writing for Employment Skill Set will provide you with two units in the Certificate III in EAL (Employment).
Pronunciation Skill Set
Gain a wide range of pronunciation skills and improve your speaking and listening
This skill set will develop your English pronunciation skills as well as help with speaking and listening.
Gain a wide range of pronunciation skills and improve your speaking and listening
This skill set will develop your English pronunciation skills, as well as help with speaking and listening. Working on your pronunciation skills will also help with expanding your vocabulary. This course can be study before, or at the same time as other units from the Certificate III in Spoken and Written English.
Our lecturers are highly skilled and experienced in pronunciation theory and teaching.
Successful completion of this skill set will give you one unit towards the Certificate III in Spoken and Written English.
