If you have a passion for health and fitness and want to help others achieve a healthier lifestyle, Personal Training is the career for you.
The Certificate IV in Fitness provides you with the skills and knowledge to begin your career as a Personal Trainer. Learn how to develop safe and effective programs for a range of clients, including older adults, disabilities, teens, sports performance and general populations. You could find yourself working for independent gyms, council run recreation centres, sporting clubs, private companies, or as a self employed sole trader delivering customised one-on-one or group training.
Practical training will be conducted in fully equipped gym facilities located at our Perth campus, as well as various outdoor venues.

Completion of SIS30315 AWN5 Certificate III in Fitness, SIS30321 BHE5 Certificate III in Fitness or equivalent.

You'll be able to access your personal timetable (find out how on our Timetables page), once you have paid your fees. In the meantime the information below provides an indication of the time commitment required to complete this course, depending on available study options.

If you can't commit to a full-time study load, the following options are available to help you achieve this qualification.

On campus - full-time/fast track

To gain the Certificate IV in Fitness in six months, the shortest time possible, you'll need to attend 

  • On campus - three days per week, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9:00am - 4:00pm
    plus
  • Online classes and assessments on Wednesday
    plus
  • Personal Training (PT) Academy Liveworks timeslot in weeks 7 - 18, either 7:00am - 9:00am or 4:00pm - 6:00pm
On campus - part-time

To spread the time commitment over twelve months, you'll need to attend

  • On campus - either one or two days per week, Tuesday and Thursday OR Friday from 9:00am - 4:00pm.
    You will have the choice of studying one day a week or two days a week in either your first or second semester of study

  • Online classes and assessments on Wednesday
    plus
  • Personal Training (PT) Academy Liveworks timeslot in weeks 7 - 18, either 7:00am - 9:00am or 4:00pm - 6:00pm
Hybrid - on campus, online and workplace

This option gives you twelve months to complete all the units, you will need to provide written confirmation that you are working in a fitness facility and have a mentor.

  • On campus - four week block for three days per week, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9:00am - 4:00pm. This can be done in either your first or second semester of study. There will also be key lecture dates throughout the course and you have the option to attend other classes if desired

  • Assessment of supervised PT sessions in the workplace (video submission) as well as set on campus assessment dates

Timetable information is indicative only and subject to change.

You will be required to complete on-the-job experience in industry, this may include early morning, lunchtime or late afternoon shifts outside of normal class time.

The qualification does not provide the skills and knowledge for an individual to provide advice or exercise instruction to high risk clients, other than to refer the client to an appropriate medical or allied health professional.

Study outside of class hours, including private study, assignment preparation, and research will be required to successfully complete your course.

Bring your own device (BYOD) is encouraged but not essential.
If you don’t have access to a computer and WiFi at home, we recommend using our library computers during library hours.

As a student you will also have additional costs associated with your study, for example text books and stationery, printing and other materials required for your assignments.

Upon graduation, students may obtain registration with the industry peak body (Fitness Australia) as a Personal Trainer in order to gain employment within the fitness industry delivering a range of individualised or group exercise programs to a variety of clients and/or client groups. Graduates may also operate as sole traders or contractors within gym or recreation centre facility.

The majority of Personal Trainers registering with Ausactive complete ongoing education and professional development as required component of their ongoing professional registration.
In addition, the qualification also provides a pathway for individuals wishing to acquire higher level qualifications, enrolling in the Diploma of Fitness or transitioning to university, to study Sport Science or Physical Education.
