Students GOMAC for local businesses

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

Our Graphic Design students developed digital marketing campaigns for real clients during COVID-19, arguably the worst shock economic shutdown many businesses had ever experienced.

  • The opportunity for students to experience and create online marketing campaigns was part of the Global Online Marketing Academic Challenge (GOMAC).
  • Student teams (in conjunction with an industry client) competed to create, run, optimise and report on digital marketing campaigns that included Google Ads and other digital advertising platform/channels.
  • This worldwide competition is open to any student enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate course at a higher education institution.

The COVID-19 restrictions and shutdowns presented new challenges for students as they worked with local Perth businesses on this project.

Students worked with local Perth business, C+Co - The Artisan Collective. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, their physical store at Westfield Carousel was closed.

Despite this challenge, students made use of a clever online campaign to increase online sales of Mother’s Day and self-care gifts. Featuring free delivery and carefully crafted language, the ads encouraged people to support local Perth craftspeople and artisans during lockdown.

They also worked with local company, Derive Event Hire. With practically all bookings and events cleared from the calendar due to social distancing, students had an uphill battle to help them stay in business.

“We believe that the campaign went very smooth,” said NMTAFE student team captain Joe Round-Rawlins.  “All team members put in a large amount of effort creating Google Ads, including daily keyword monitoring to maintain our focus and relevance.

“Our client wanted at least two to three sales [during the COVID-19 lockdown] and we managed to get two sales and four quotes through the use of our Google Ads campaign. Given the experience we have now, we also know how to structure our ads to get more clicks. The communication within the group was amazing and this project turned out to be a great learning experience.”

Results of the competition will be announced in September on the GOMAC (opens in a new tab) website.

Congratulations to all the Advanced Diploma of Graphic Design students involved in this global challenge.
