Humanoid robot equips students with job-ready skills.

  • North Metropolitan TAFE (NMTAFE) has acquired SID, a humanoid robot to teach students programming, automation and robotic skills.
  • Proudly supported by Sodexo, a catering and facilities management services provider across a wide range of industries in Australia, SID has humanlike capabilities including speech, movement, gesture, facial expression and touch.
  • Visitors to the SkillsWest Careers & Employment Expo will have the opportunity to chat and interact with SID.

NMTAFE will debut SID (Sodexo’s Interactive Droid) in the STEM Hub at this week’s SkillsWest Careers & Employment Expo(opens in a new tab) .

Proudly supported by Sodexo, the intelligent bot is the College’s latest technological acquisition that will provide an opportunity for robotics and programming students to experience the advanced technology firsthand.

Travis Badge, NMTAFE ICT lecturer, said building real-world skills in the classroom is invaluable for students.

“Our close ties with the industries that are using, developing and adapting technology for their industries are crucial to ensuring our students are skill ready as they enter the workforce.”

“SID’s unique capabilities allow him to engage with students and make learning the skills required for jobs in mining, engineering, electrical and electronic information technology and manufacturing industries, fun and exciting."

“Our hope is that SID will inspire more students to pursue a career in STEM where many future jobs are,” he said.

Students and expo attendees will have the chance to interact with SID from 26 – 28 August at the SkillsWest STEM Hub and discover his incredible humanlike capabilities including speech, movement, gesture, facial expression and touch.

Standing at 1.3m tall and equipped with photorealistic technology, SID is able to recognise faces and objects and respond accordingly.
