Yet another of North Metropolitan TAFE’s (NMTAFE) staff’s hard work is being celebrated, with Enrolled Nursing lecturer, Ms Eugenie Jelly being published in the King’s Birthday 2023 Honours List for achieving the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) by the Governor-General (Chancellor of the Order of Australia) for her service to nursing as a clinician and educator.

A long-serving and valued staff member and Clinical Facilitator at NMTAFE, Eugenie has contributed significantly to build the capability of a trained enrolled nursing (EN) workforce for the WA health sector.

Eugenie has represented TAFE on the Nurses Board of WA and was also appointed to the Working Party for the Australian Palliative Residential Aged Care Project at Edith Cowan University. As co-author of the nursing text book, Essential Clinical Skills: Enrolled Nurses (Currently on 5th Edition), Eugenie has contributed her knowledge and experience to the entire WA VET sector and beyond.

After working as a clinical nurse for various hospitals and nursing homes, Eugenie first joined TAFE in 1989 as a lecturer, assessor and course coordinator for its EN program.

Eugenie was part of the initial staff group who developed the program; lecturing, writing, and marking examinations and clinical assessments, allocating student placements and submitting candidates to the WA Board for Nursing Registration.

NMTAFE’s Managing Director Michelle Hoad said NMTAFE was incredibly fortunate to have Eugenie on board as an esteemed member of NMTAFE’s nursing team since 2015.

“Like fellow Medal of the Order of Australia recipient, Patrick O'Brien, Eugenie has gone to extraordinary lengths to nurture a diversity of students in their goal of becoming an enrolled nurse,” she said.

“Eugenie acts with absolute focus on the quality of the course content and its delivery, ensuring that her students benefit from a quality learning experience.”

Eugenie is also acknowledged for consistently supporting and mentoring new staff, ensuring they are well equipped to teach to the highest standards demanded by the rigour of this critical industry area and the social impact it carries.

Eugenie will be presented with the insignia of the award at a ceremony at Government House in September/October.
