North Metropolitan TAFE (NMTAFE) horticulture students were thrilled to receive a visit from a Richgro guest speaker, Rachel Dickens (Commercial Sales Representative) to share invaluable insights into the world of horticulture.

One of the highlights of Rachel’s visit was the sharing of knowledge about the sources of potting media ingredients.

Students had the opportunity to delve into the intricacies of horticulture materials, such as Gingin rivers and pine bark from the Southwest.

The session was an eye-opener, shedding light on the essential elements that make up successful potting mixtures.

In an ever-changing horticultural landscape, staying updated is key. Rachel enlightened students about the recent Western Australian ban on jarrah wood mulches.

She emphasised the importance of adapting to new regulations and shared how sawdust, for instance, now includes a mix of other wood species.

This awareness was vital for NMTAFE students as they embark on their horticultural journeys.

The visit not only provided knowledge but also showcased Richgro’s dedication to supporting local WA suppliers and communities.

The students gained valuable insights into how a company with such a strong reputation in horticulture actively contributes to the growth and sustainability of the region. It was a lesson in corporate responsibility and community building that will leave a lasting impression on our students.

Richgro said they very grateful for the opportunity provided by NMTAFE to engage with students as they continue their exciting journey into horticulture.

Industry interactions are instrumental in shaping the students' understanding of the horticultural industry and its broader impact on society.
