More than 550 secondary students from across WA were given a fantastic insight into the many career options in WA's world class resources sector this week.

Get Into Resources 2023 was held at North Metropolitan TAFE’s (NMTAFE) East Perth Campus where more than 50 volunteers from the mining sector demonstrated a range of engaging mining related activities to encourage the students to get into resources.

Students from 22 regional and metropolitan schools attended the unique careers event and were given the opportunity to engage with event sponsors including Mineral Resources, Rio Tinto, Sandfire, Macmahon, Barminco, Northern Star and BHP through the hands-on activities.

“With 46% of the mining sector VET trained, it is so important to give students this opportunity to experience first-hand what a career in mining can offer – working with cutting edge technology, opportunities for travel and great camaraderie within the sector, I love my job and I love being able to talk to students about it,” said Jade Singleton, Mining Plus Area Manager and GIR Committee Chair of the event.

Established in 2012, GIR is an annual three-day event run by a not-for-profit committee, the event included a variety of interactive activities, workshops, tours, information booths, and presentations created to highlight some of the 150 different career opportunities available in the resource sector.

By the end of the 2023 event, GIR will have welcomed and hopefully inspired more than 3,000 students to NMTAFE’s Perth campus.

Minister for Mines, Hon. Bill Johnston MLA delivered the welcome address on Tuesday, highlighting the importance of the contribution of the resources sector to the WA economy.

Minister for Training,  Hon. Simone McGurk MLA addressed the students, met with sponsors and students and donned safety glasses and gloves for some fun STEM related activities.
