Learn the art of mould making and slip casting 

What is slip casting, you say? This ancient technique involves making a plaster mould from a prototype. The mould is then filled with liquid clay over and over, enabling production of multiple matching forms.

Come, immerse yourself in the craft, principles, and applications of ceramic slip casting. Gain hands-on experience in creating your own single dropout mould. You may design and hand build a simple clay prototype from scratch, make a plaster mould then cast a number of forms. Experimenting with surface decoration including sgraffito, inlay and wax resist as well as glaze decoration.

This course is perfect for beginners or potters wishing to expand their clay techniques.

Topics covered in this course include:

  • Design and make prototype (perhaps 2 small pieces - one pinch pot and one draped over an armature)
  • Make plaster mould(s)
  • Cast first pieces, art history/ contemporary ceramic art lecture on slip casting
  • Wax resist decoration and 2nd cast
  • Inlay decoration and 3rd cast (2 colours)
  • Scraffetto decoration and 4th cast
  • Decoration of choice and 5th cast (cast first to remove and clean up at end of class)
  • Glazing
