Engage your passion for working with children and supporting their individual needs
The Certificate IV in School Based Education Support will provide you with the practical skills and knowledge to support students with a range of abilities and needs, including those with diagnosed disability. You will also learn how to support teaching staff in schools in kindergarten, pre-primary, primary, secondary and education support schools, centres or units.
You have the opportunity to complete this course through full-time study on campus over 6 months (or you may choose to complete it part-time over 12 months). There is also an online option delivered over 12 months, which is a little different to on-campus study as you do not have face to face contact with your lecturers. If on-campus study is not your preference, then online study is a great option. You will be supported by your online lecturers and completing your course via an online platform which contains all your study material and assessments. You will be provided a login and password to access this material once you have been enrolled at North Metropolitan TAFE.
No matter how you choose to study, as part of this qualification you will need to undertake a supervised work placement where you will be able to apply the skills and knowledge you have learned in a classroom setting. Students are required to obtain a Working with Children Check and a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check (Education Department WA) before attending work placement.
The online delivery will be done via Collaborate sessions (on Blackboard), which are live classes run online with a lecturer taking you through the training.
We also offer an Aboriginal Islander Education Officer (AIEO) program. Find out more about our AIEO program.

The majority of your study will be via our online platform, Blackboard. You will work through online units containing readings, videos, web links, journal articles and more. You will need to devote between 10 and 15 hours to online study and assessment work each week.
Online orientation
Orientation is compulsory and provides you with important information regarding your studies. Mandatory orientation for online study will be available in a Collaborate session via Blackboard.

Your mandatory work placement in a school will happen in two blocks - 2 weeks of full-time placement in Semester 1 of study and 3 weeks in your final semester of study.
Although the majority of your study is online, there are approximately 6 mandatory on campus days across the year. These include practical assessment and simulation days, work placement preparation days and debrief days. If you cannot come on to campus for these days, you will not be able to pass this course.
Please note if you choose to study online, you'll need all of the technical requirements for at-home study. If you don’t have access to a computer and WiFi at home, we recommend using our library computers during library hours.

If you don’t have access to a computer and WiFi at home, we recommend using our library computers during library hours.
