Animation students from our Joondalup campus have received recognition for their work on the animated movie Arlo the Alligator Boy currently streaming on Netflix with the students credited.

The nine Advanced Diploma of Screen and Media (Animation and Visualisation) students from NMTAFE Joondalup completed work experience with animation studio Ink Animation on the international production as part of their studies last year.

Staff Travis Badge and Tanya Beeson also received a credit for the film after working with the students on the project.

Ink Animation, run by Perth local Justin Stewart, began the partnership with NMTAFE Joondalup late last year after Mr Stewart returned to Perth after 10 years away due to COVID-19.

Mr Stewart wanted to give back to his home state and provide work experience to students looking for a career in 2D animation, with NMTAFE’s animation courses providing the perfect fit.

The Advanced Diploma of Screen and Media students have continued to work on a variety of top-level industry projects for Ink Animation as part of their studies this year.

The students did colour and clean-up work on a recent music video for Dutch-American electronic dance music duo Area 21 song La La La(opens in a new tab) and are working on a follow-up television series for Arlo the Alligator Boy.

NMTAFE Digital Media and IT lecturer Travis Badge said it was a fantastic achievement by the students and acknowledged the agreement with Ink Animation and the quality work experience it provided to students during their studies which would set them up in their future employment.

“Being able to offer students the opportunity to gain real-life experience on such high-profile projects is second to none; I’d recommend the course to everyone, including university graduates looking to boost their portfolio of work,” he said.

Applications for the Advanced Diploma of Screen and Media (Animation & Visualisation) at NMTAFE Joondalup Campus are now open for Semester 2, 2021.
