Keen to take the lead in construction?
This non-accredited short course is well suited to current or ex-construction workers with an eye to becoming a building supervisor. You'll cover high tech knowledge and the relevant standards regarding the 9 major trades in the residential/commercial construction.
You'll gain the skills and knowledge needed to identify and assess a range of building and construction techniques, including concreting, brickwork, carpentry, electrical services, plumbing and drainage, tiling, ceiling fixing and painting. Once you successfully complete this short course you'll receive a Certificate of Participation.
Dress requirements
You will need to have safety goggles, gloves and safety shoes but all tools and materials will be supplied.
No previous experience required but please note applicants must be over 18 years of age as this is an adult learning environment.
- Concreting - soil compaction, footings, reinforcement and slab construction requirements, curing methods.
- Bricklaying - mortar mixes, setting out to plan details, laying and jointing bricks, installing windows and doors.
- Roof frame - roof types (in timber) and standards hanging doors and fitting door handles, skirtings.
- Electrical Licence trade - all necessary requirements and standards.
- Plumbing - drains and sewage, pre-lays, tube out, sanitary ware, completion fit off and standards, water authority requirements and gas fitting requirements.
- Plastering - surface preparation, types of cements used in industry, various other trade materials and mix ratios to meet the standards, float/render and sand finishes and setting coats, stone imitation finishes, various texture coatings and products and other alternative finishes.
- Ceiling fixing - fixing methods and standards for various lining boards (Gyprock and cement sheeting) extensive variety of trade materials, stud adhesive, base coats, top coats and cornice fixing methods, suspended ceilings requirements, flushing and sanding, bulkhead construction and maintenance requirements.
- Ceramic tiling - surface preparation, various materials, cement based adhesives, flexible adhesives, pre-mixed products, epoxy grouts for commercial and industrial uses, types of tiles, porcelain, large format slabs, glass mosaics, trade do’s and don’ts, screeding and mix ratio, setting out, brick ups, grouting, waterproofing to meet the standards.
- Painting and decorating - various surface preparation methods including removal of surface contamination, sanding, paint removal products and more, extensive painting materials used today, priming, and glossing, internal and external painting requirements standards, weather shield products, top coats and sealers, timber staining and more.
