  • Automotive Mechanics Volume 1 Textbook
  • Appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including long cotton pants, cotton shirt, steel capped safety boots and safety glasses.

Typical timetable:

  • 3 days per week
  • Training ‘on the job’ - a compulsory component of training is undertaken with 75 hours of industry work placement and additional 75 hours of project work at TAFE.

Successful completion of this qualification provides you with the opportunity to become an apprentice in the automotive industry, but you need to be registered with the The Apprenticeship Office and employed.

This course will stream to automotive apprentice, trade assistant, mechanic, parts interpreter and service adviser.

  • There is significant work placement (work experience) component to this course. It will consist of a combination of simulated work shop experience on campus and industry placement (industry placement will consist of at least three weeks).

Entrance Requirements

You will be required to obtain a Trainee (TL000) or Classroom (CL000) Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Trainee Licence through the Australian Refrigeration Council before you can attend the practical (workshop) training at North Metropolitan TAFE. Please allow up to two weeks to
obtain your trainee licence.

Prerequisites

Trade Certificate (Automotive) or current Automotive Apprentice (at least completing the 3rd year).

North Metropolitan TAFE offers this as a standalone course, but if you are an apprentice student close to completing the AUR30616 Certificate III in Light Vehicle Technology or AUR30316 Certificate III in Automotive Electrical Technology,  you have the opportunity to gain the Certificate II in Automotive Air-Conditioning Technology as well.

This course is delivered through a combination of online study and on-campus practical components. You can also apply for Recognition of Prior Learning where appropriate.

The AUR20218 Certificate II in Automotive Air-Conditioning Technology is required to obtain a Refrigerant Handling License. Applying for a license is done through the Australian Refrigeration Council’s website www.arctick.org.
