Product Design

Studying art at North Metropolitan TAFE is the best thing you can do for your future career as an artist. Try your hand at Wheelwork

We have one of the top ceramics facilities in Australia, so what better place to learn to throw a pot! This hands-on class has an emphasis on the throwing techniques on the potter’s wheel, turning and joining clay forms.
This class is aimed at the total beginner as well as those returning to clay wishing to regain their clay confidence. You will be encouraged to think outside the circle and try altering their forms, and some surface decoration with slip or oxide decoration
Basic glazing techniques will be covered depending on the progress of the class.

There are no prerequisites for this class.

Dress requirements
•    You'll need to wear enclosed shoes e.g. sneakers or leather type shoes
•    Long hair must be tied back and any long accessories must be removed when working on the machines
•    We recommend you wear old clothing or an apron to protect your clothing

For this course, you will need to bring:
•    Old towel or apron
•    Own wheelwork tools (optional)

What is provided
Clay will be supplied for projects undertaken in the course.  Any projects/items outside of this short course content will not be fired and the lecturer has the right to reject work that is outside the course scope or mass produced.

Please note that there has been an update to the materials provided in ceramics short courses. There will be up to 2 bags of clay supplied to students for projects undertaken in the course. Additional clay can be purchased from the Bookshop and collected from your lecturer in your class.

Please let us know if you are left-handed so we can provide you with a suitable ceramics wheel for the course.

Enjoy a smorgasbord of ceramics techniques

This course covers a range of ceramic techniques and is aimed at beginner to intermediate students. The techniques taught in class may include wheel-throwing, sculpting, hand-building, texturing and decorative techniques, slab-building, coil-building and glazing.

There are no prerequisites for this course.

  • You must wear enclosed shoes e.g. sneakers or leather type shoes

For this course, you will need to bring:

  • Old towel or apron

North Metropolitan TAFE is offering this new Ceramics Extension Skill Set to help you develop the range and breadth of your ceramics techniques and treatments.
Whether you are an emerging or experienced ceramicist or potter looking to explore and experiment with ceramics or an art teacher/instructor wanting to complete some professional development in a ceramics studio environment, this skill set will extend the scope of your current techniques and help you manage and operate kilns safely to ensure safe creative practice.

You'll refine throwing, moulding and casting techniques as well as exploring glazing processes and ceramics surface treatments.

Completion of this skill set will put you on the path to achieving the Diploma of Visual Arts.

These popular art classes for children are held at North Metropolitan TAFE's art building at 12 Aberdeen St in Perth.  The purpose built art studios are centrally located and accessible via the CAT bus link and within easy walking distance from the Perth train station.

This six week course on Saturdays is specially designed for children between the ages of 9 and 15 who want to extend their skills in art through a range of traditional and experimental approaches.  The classes are taught by qualified and experienced art lecturers. Class size is limited to 12 to maximise the tuition and is split into two groups, one for 9-11 year olds and the other for 12-15 year olds.

This course provides a range of activities ranging across painting, drawing, collage, print, sculpture, ceramics as well as experiments in perspective and compostion and reference is made to artists and art movements.  The course includes visits where appropriate, to North Metropolitan TAFE's Art Gallery to talk about contemporary art and incorporate it into the children's creative work.

An introduction to drawing

This course is an introduction to basic approaches and materials used in drawing. It is intended to give beginners a foundation to work from, as well as a refresher course for those who already have some skills and experience. The aim is help you develop your drawing skills, hand-eye co-ordination and exploration of your own creativity. You'll be introduced to exercises in still-life (objects), linear perspective, portraits, expression and life-drawing (nude or draped model). The range of materials includes pencils, graphite, charcoal, ink and papers.

  • Observation of shape and form, proportions, tone, light and shade
  • Understanding of structure via linear perspective
  • Different approaches to drawing

You will be supplied with basic materials for drawing (paper, charcoal, ink, pencils, and erasers) during the class.  You are welcome to bring along any further drawing materials that you already have and would like to explore in the class.

Take your photos to a new level

This course will teach you how to use Lightroom, from basic techniques through to more advance applications (such as portrait retouching). Moving beyond just taking photographs, this course will help you develop your body of work and lead you down the path to getting the work shown to a wider audience.
This is a practical course - you will have access to a computer in the classroom to use the techniques and methods as they are explained and demonstrated by the lecturer.

Explore the way paint can achieve different effects

This course will introduce you to the fundamentals of painting. You will learn the correct procedure for colour mixing and paint application. Each participant will be taken through a series of exercises to help them acquire the skills for painting. The course will conclude with the production of a still life painting.

You will become familiar with industry standards and practices, so you can fabricate your own unique and individual pieces of jewellery using new and traditional techniques.

      Graphic Design is an art that combines visual communication and problem solving

      Our graphic design and printing and graphic arts programs simulate the real world, which means you will receive project briefs directly from clients with visual communication requirements. All units focus heavily on the practical nature of design and replicate a real design workplace by using Mac computers and Adobe Creative Cloud software.
