Diploma of Anaesthetic Technology

This qualification will equip you to work alongside an anaesthetist undertaking the work tasks required of an anaesthetic technician. This includes preparing patients for anaesthesia and then monitoring them during and after surgery.

You are likely to be exposed to a wide range of surgeries with differing needs as well as to unexpected occurrences and allergic reactions requiring you to respond quickly. You'll be equipped to assist in every step of anaesthetic procedures including:

North Metropolitan TAFE  recently undertook extensive industry consultation with hospitals in the Perth metropolitan area.  Anaesthetic technicians play a critical role in supporting the anaesthetist and the role requires a wide range of complex skills and extensive knowledge to perform safely and effectively in the workplace.

Did you know that over one quarter of all people admitted to hospital have an operation? Many more have treatments that require sterile equipment to be used. You could assist in ensuring that patients are protected from infection during their care.

You will learn about infection control and prevention, how the body works and medical terms.

You will also learn how to clean, inspect, package, sterilise and distribute instruments and equipment for surgical and clinical procedures.

Do you want to be a part of the health team that assists in assessing the client’s health status through interpretation of blood results? You could do this by learning how to collect blood and other specimens for testing.

You will learn the skill of safely taking venous blood and other samples, about how the body works, how to prevent the spread of infection as well as medical terms which you will be able use in any further health related studies you may choose to undertake.
