Gain the skills to assist allied health professionals (physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech pathologists) with the implementation of maintenance therapy programs to improve a client's quality of life.

During this course you'll learn how to work with children, adults and older people with a range of physical disabilities, mental health conditions, developmental delays, communication difficulties and/or social disadvantage. You will have access to a team of allied health professionals who are able to share their experiences and support your learning throughout the course.

Online learning makes up part of the course delivery and access to online resources to reinforce classroom learning is also provided. You will be supported in learning the required knowledge and skills through classroom discussions and simulation activities before undertaking a full-time work placement.

As a successful graduate you'll have a wide range of job options depending on where your passions lie and you may gain employment in both public and private health settings such as hospitals, aged care facilities, schools, mental health clinics, private practices and not for profit organisations.

Do you want to make a difference in other people’s lives? Allied health assistants work with a range of clients to improve quality of life.

Our Mt Lawley campus will be offering the generic range of units to provide you with the skills necessary to seek employment as as an allied health assistant (AHA).
If you are seeking a specialised focus on physiotherapy, this will be offered at our McLarty campus.

You may find employment in both public and private health settings such as hospitals and community rehabilitation, aged care facilities, schools, mental health clinics, private practices and not for profit organisations.

You will learn how to work with children, adults and older people with a range of physical disabilities, mental health conditions, developmental delays, communication difficulties and/or social disadvantage, all done with the knowledge of safe work practices, legal and ethical considerations and current industry standards.

You will gain the required knowledge and skills through classroom discussions, simulation activities and workplace learning. Then you will undertake six weeks of full-time placement which North Metropolitan TAFE organises for you via our range of industry partners. Online learning makes up a small part of the course delivery but you will also have access to online resources to reinforce classroom learning.

You will have access to a team of allied health professionals who are able to share their experiences and support your learning throughout the course.

Some students have gone on to study allied health degrees at university after this course has ignited their passion.

Stand out from the crowd with this skill set

If you've completed a Health related Certificate III (or higher) qualification, this specialised Podiatry Assistant skill set will enhance your skills and help improve your employability.

After successful completion you may gain employment working alongside podiatrists and other allied health professionals to provide support to a range of people needing therapeutic and basic foot care as well as people living with foot problems associated with chronic health conditions.

You'll attend campus for a two week intensive face-to-face delivery with the opportunity to gain practical skills at a health clinic before completing a minimum of 120 hours of practical experience in the form of a 3 week full-time placement.

Be part of a vital health care team

This qualification will equip you to work alongside an anaesthetist undertaking the work tasks required of an anaesthetic technician. This includes preparing patients for anaesthesia and then monitoring them during and after surgery.

You are likely to be exposed to a wide range of surgeries with differing needs as well as to unexpected occurrences and allergic reactions requiring you to respond quickly. 

The Diploma course is a very practical, hands-on course, delivered in a face to face classroom format as well as in the simulated anaesthetic technology laboratory. The course is delivered over 2 years and includes a full time clinical placement in a hospital or clinic, organised by North Metropolitan TAFE.
This course will next be offered in semester 2, 2021.

A rewarding career supporting hospital pharmacists

During this course you will learn how to support the hospital pharmacist in ensuring patients receive the correct medications and information about how to take their medications safely. This is important because medication errors continue to be the highest number of recorded incidents in health care.

Your attention to detail in reading prescriptions and then recording and labelling medications, will contribute to safer medication dispensary administration. By supporting the hospital pharmacist to provide clear and detailed information to patients about their medications you will be helping patients with many different conditions to understand why they have been prescribed certain medications.

You may choose to go on to work as a hospital pharmacy technician or as a technician at a pharmaceutical company, where you may compound medications for critically unwell patients. Your skills and knowledge may also prove highly valuable at your local pharmacy.

Protect yourself and others in the community from infectious diseases

The pandemic has highlighted the importance of building the capacity and understanding of the workforce to practice safe infection control procedures. This skill set will provide you with the skills and knowledge to assist in protecting yourself and others in the community from infectious diseases. 

You will understand how infections are spread, ways of preventing the spread of infection and how to protect yourself and others from infection.  It is most suited for those that are working in the health care sector, or those that would like to acquire a new skill before returning to employment.

This online course allows you to undertake studies within your own timeframe. You will receive a short induction and ongoing support from your lecturer. Once you have completed the online study component you will be required to book into a four hour practical lab session at our Mount Lawley campus where you will practice skills and undertake a workplace assessment.

An essential support service for the health industry

Did you know that over one quarter of all people admitted to hospital have an operation? Many more have treatments that require sterile equipment to be used. You could assist in ensuring that patients are protected from infection during their care.

Being able to work with others and carry out your work safely is an important part of sterilisation work and is covered in this course.

On completion of your course you will be able to work in a private or public hospital, a clinic or an operating theatre sterile supply department.
