Foundry basic - Metal casting

If you have always wanted to produce a sculpture, ornament or some other metal cast creation, North Metropolitan TAFE's Foundry basic short course will give you the skills to do just that.

The course will cover:

  • Safe use of sand moulding and chemicals and equipment
  • Basic metallurgy of cast metals
  • Pattern tooling for sand moulds
  • Sand moulding and casting essentials

Metal machining for beginners

Gain practical skills in basic machining on lathes, milling machines and ancillary machines such as pedestal drills and grinders by doing North Metropolitan TAFE's Metal machining for beginners course.

Gain the heavy-duty qualification you need for a job in the metal trades

If you enjoy working with your hands, are physically fit and able to visualise how an object should look from a drawing, you may have the aptitude for working as a fabricator. Fabrication engineering tradespersons cut, shape, join and finish metal to make, maintain or repair metal products and structures. They may produce moulds or patterns for metal castings, apply coatings and work with a variety of materials.

Certificate II in Engineering (Heavy Fabrication Pre-Apprenticeship)

Are you looking to apply new technologies to a traditional trade?

You will gain the skills and knowledge to be able to operate heavy fabrication equipment such as guillotines, metal rolls and brake presses. You will also be exposed to different welding and thermal cutting processes. You will receive instruction in the safely use of hand and power tools, be able to read measuring tools, read and interpret engineering  drawings, and operate in an engineering workplace observing health and safety guidelines.

Graduates can continue their studies in a metal fabrication apprenticeship. Metal fabricators and welders work in a diverse trade, applying a broad range of fabrication and welding skills to industries including: mechanical and civil engineering, mining resources sector, heavy haulage and road transport, agriculture machinery, construction, defence, refineries and materials bulk handling.
