This skill set has been designed to help you support children aged 2 - 12 who have educational needs associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

If you are a teacher, an education assistant or an early childhood educator, North Metropolitan TAFE's experienced lecturers can provide you wth the knowledge to support children with autism in school or care settings.

Childcare Introduction Skill Set

Get a glimpse into the Childcare sector with this introductory skill set

If you are considering a career in childcare, you can get an idea of what's in store with this introductory skill set.

You'll gain an understanding of the core skills required to work in child care and start on a pathway to further study and employment in this sector.
You will do a 27.5 hour work placement as part of the training included in this skill set.

Training will be delivered in a combination of ways over 10 weeks, including one day per week, 9:00am - 2:30pm plus a 27.5 hour work placement.

      The COVID19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of building the capacity and understanding of the workforce across a range of areas.

      This skill set has been developed to promote safe food practices, infection prevention, and control and safe manual handling measures. These measures will assist in providing a safe environment and hygiene practices when preparing, handling, serving and assisting  with meals. Ancillary aged care and personal care staff including cooks, and chefs as well as staff involved in meal delivery and assisting clients with their meals will benefit from this food handling skill set.

      North Metropolitan TAFE is giving you the opportunity to complete this Certificate II in Introduction to Disability Care (Disability Pre-traineeship)  whilst participating in a work placement with one of our industry partners Brightwater, IdentitywaNulsen Disability Services and Senses Australia.

      The program will give you an introduction to the job role, help you confirm if the career is right for you, and increase your chances of continuing onto further study or paid employment within the industry.

      Disability Support Workers provide care, emotional support, physical assistance and supervision for people with physical and/or intellectual disabilities. Disability Support Workers tend to focus on tasks that alleviate physical discomfort and promote social connectedness, independence, emotional wellbeing and general health.

      This is highly rewarding work, but employers look for people who are job ready with basic skills and knowledge for entry level roles in one-on-one or group support settings, or for administrative role in a care facility. With the Provide Individual Support skill set, that will be you! You'll learn about following a client's individual care or support plan to meet their personal support needs, how to comply with personal hygiene standards, maintain food safety, contribute to the cleanliness of food handling areas and dispose of food appropriately, prepare for and provide medication assistance and complete medication documentation, supporting a client to self-administer medication, safe work practices for the health and safety of yourself and your clients, and how to recognise potentially hazardous manual tasks and complete those tasks in a safe manner.
