This apprenticeship will give you the skills to prepare work for dental surgeries and produce dental appliances such as bridges and splints. You'll have the opportunity to meet other apprentices when attending the theory sessions at the Oral Health Centre of WA. This modern facility is also the training centre for dentists, oral health therapists and laboratory assistants.

Learn along side dentists, oral health therapists and dental technicians in training

Located at the Oral Health Centre of WA (OHCWA) in Nedlands this course will give you real industry experience in a modern dental care facility. You will gain the skills needed to prepare and clean a surgery, assists the dentist chair side, and process and sterilise all of the instruments.

How to apply

Work placement

During your studies we will arrange a minimum of 250 hours of clinical experience at various dental centres including;

  • Oral Health Centre of Western Australia (OHCWA); working with UWA Dental Students to perform procedures on adult patients.
  • Dental Therapy Centres, working in a government primary school centre with Dental Therapists to perform oral health procedures on children aged from 5-16 years.
  • Government Adult Clinic, working with Dental Professionals to perform oral health care procedure on adult patients.
  • Private Practices, working with dental professionals in privately owned clinics assisting with patients across all age ranges.

Please note that no jewellery is permitted on hands or wrists while you are on placement.

Important information

Please note there are additional costs to pay when enrolling in this course:

  • you may be required to complete a health check
  • you may need immunisations and/or to provide evidence of vaccinations - Hepatitis B, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella and Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis (DTP) record of vaccination (cost will vary depending on your doctor and what vaccinations are needed). Serology to confirm immunisation should be provided within the first three weeks of your course.
  • Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) if required
  • Working With Children Check (WWCC) 
  • National Police Clearance - through Australia Post, best to apply for this first 
  • Uniform – Polo shirt and pants and apron.  Details of these will be given at orientation.

This course will prepare you to work as a laboratory assistant in a dental laboratory team. If you’ve ever thought about being a part of this essential profession then this is the perfect qualification to get you started.

As a Dental Assistant, you will be responsible for preparing the surgery, assisting the dentist chair side, processing and sterilising all of the instruments and cleaning the surgery. You will also develop skills in reception work and the management of supplies.

Our dental assisting qualification provides you with skills that are relevant to current industry trends and practices.

North Metropolitan TAFE's Dental Assisting courses are located in the Oral Health Centre of WA (OHCWA) at Nedlands. This is also the training centre for dentists, oral health therapists and dental technicians.
As a part of this qualification you will have the opportunity to take part in work placements at other dental organisations or at the Oral Health Care Centre of WA, giving you real experience in the industry in a modern dental care facility.

If you are a Dental Assistant currently working in a surgery you may be able to complete this course by studying part-time, attending classes on Fridays and incorporating workplace assessments.

Please note that due to an increase in places available for this course in 2020 students may be required to attend lectures one day per week at another North Metro TAFE campus.

The Certificate III in Dental Laboratory Assisting will prepare you to start a new career working in a dental laboratory. Dental laboratory assistants work alongside dental technicians to construct models, custom impression trays, bite registration rims and thermoformed appliances, such as bleaching (whitening) trays, retainers and sports mouthguards, as well as articulating and transfering records.

This is a stand alone qualification that teaches you all the skills you need to start working. This course is also the ideal pathway to gain an apprenticeship and complete HLT55118 Diploma of Dental Technology. Many local employers prefer to sign an apprentice that has completed HLT35115 Certificate III in Dental Laboratory Assisting.

The Certificate III in Dental Laboratory Assisting includes supervised work skills in a simulated dental laboratory at the state of the art Oral Health Centre of WA. You will get to train in the same facility as dental students, oral health professionals and dental assistants.
