Support people accessing mental health services

Through this course you'll learn how to recognise and respond appropriately to people with mental health issues, and how to apply the values and principles of the mental health sector in a recovery oriented way.  You will undertake a supervised or simulated work placement where you will be able to apply the skills and knowledge you have learned. We recommend that you are over the age of 18 before enrolling in this course.

We recommend that you are over the age of 18 before enrolling in this course as the fieldwork placement and employment outcomes are very limited for students under the age of 18.

* You will need to be enrolled in the appropriate units to be offered a work placement - it is not a standard for all enrolments.

Important information

Eligibility for supervised work placement is subject to obtaining a satisfactory Police Clearance. You will also need a Working with Children Check if your placement involves contact with children. Additonal costs will include $65 National Police Clearance, through Australia Post (it is best to apply for this first) and $11 Working With Children Check (WWCC).

Please note entry into this course is competitive. All applicants are required to attend a mandatory interview with the Course Coordinator and complete a short Literacy assessment.  The interview and assessment will take approximately 1 hour. The interview is an opportunity to discuss what you can expect from the course and what will be expected of you should you be offered a position. Interviews will be conducted at Joondalup, Leederville and Midland campuses during the week commencing 9 December. Students will receive further information when they apply, including how to book your interview.

We recommend that you are over the age of 18 before enrolling in this course as the fieldwork placement and employment outcomes are very limited for students under the age of 18.

Work placement

However, you will need to be enrolled in the appropriate units to be offered a work placement - it is not a standard for all enrolments. There will be two work placements each lasting approximately 170 hours reaching a total of 340 hours Supervised Field Work Placement over the qualification. You will need to be enrolled in the appropriate units to be offered a work placement - it is not a standard for all enrolments.

You will also need a Working with Children Check if your placement involves contact with children.

Typical timetrable:

  • 3 full days of class contact per week on campus between the hours of 9:00am - 3:30pm. Classes run for the first 13 weeks of semester and then 6 weeks of Supervised Field Work commence before returning to class for a final debrief in week 20.

You will complete 300 hours of supervised field placement with one of 170 government and community service agencies in the areas of mental health, drug and alcohol abuse, domestic violence, housing, adolescent development, parenting and family support. Eligibility for supervised work placement is subject to obtaining a satisfactory Police Clearance. You will also need a Working with Children Check if your placement involves contact with children.
