This qualification will further your skills in developing services and programs to meet your clients needs.

You'll learn about advanced communication, group work, how to design and deliver programs that enhance community participation and the legal and ethical responsibilities and requirements for working in community services. At this level you may have supervisory responsibilities.

As part of this qualification you will undertake a supervised work placement where you will be able to apply the skills and knowledge you have learned.

We recommend that students be over the age of 18 before enrolling into this course as the employment/placement outcomes are very limited for students under the age of 18.

Work placement

* You will need to be enrolled in the appropriate units to be offered a work placement - it is not a standard for all enrolments.

Important information

You will need to complete the minimum of 80 hours of work placement. If you live in the local area of Perth, you will be assisted to find placement if you are unable to find one. Please note eligibility for supervised work placement is subject to obtaining a satisfactory Police Clearance. You will also need a Working with Children Check if your placement involves contact with children.

Please note entry into this course is competitive. All applicants are required to attend a mandatory interview with the Course Coordinator and complete a short Literacy assessment.  The interview and assessment will take approximately 1 hour. The interview is an opportunity to discuss what you can expect from the course and what will be expected of you should you be offered a position. Interviews will be conducted at Joondalup, Leederville and Midland campuses during the week commencing 9 December. Students will receive further information when they apply, including how to book your interview.

We recommend that you are over the age of 18 before enrolling in this course as the fieldwork placement and employment outcomes are very limited for students under the age of 18.

Work placement

A Work Placement is compulsory for students undertaking a Certificate IV or Diploma as some units in these qualifications require you to demonstrate your skills in a work place setting. These units will be highlighted on your study plan. You will need to be enrolled in the appropriate units to be offered a work placement - it is not a standard for all enrolments.

Important information

You will complete 300 hours of supervised field placement with one of 170 government and community service agencies in the areas of mental health, drug and alcohol abuse, domestic violence, housing, adolescent development, parenting and family support. Eligibility for supervised work placement is subject to obtaining a satisfactory Police Clearance. You will also need a Working with Children Check if your placement involves contact with children.

There will be two work placements each lasting approximately 170 hours reaching a total of 340 hours Supervised Field Work Placement over the qualification. You will need to be enrolled in the appropriate units to be offered a work placement - it is not a standard for all enrolments.

You will also need a Working with Children Check if your placement involves contact with children.
Additonal costs will include $65 National Police Clearance, through Australia Post (it is best to apply for this first) and $11 Working With Children Check (WWCC).

Important information

Typical timetrable:

  • 3 full days of class contact per week on campus between the hours of 9:00am - 3:30pm. Classes run for the first 13 weeks of semester and then 6 weeks of Supervised Field Work commence before returning to class for a final debrief in week 20.

Work placement

In the second semester you will be required to undertake a work placement of 80 hours. Please note, you will need to be enrolled in the appropriate units to be offered a work placement - it is not a standard for all enrolments.

Important information

Classes are delivered between 9am and 3.30pm every Tuesday and Wednesday during term.

Certificate IV in Mental Health

This qualification focuses on the support and needs of people accessing mental health services. You'll learn about responding to self harm, early intervention strategies, support, advocacy and policy development. You will also learn about the mental health sector and issues facing those with a mental health disorder.

You will undertake a supervised or simulated work placement where you will be able to apply the skills and knowledge you have learned.

* You will need to be enrolled in the appropriate units to be offered a work placement - it is not a standard for all enrolments.

Important information

Eligibility for supervised work placement is subject to obtaining a satisfactory Police Clearance. You will also need a Working with Children Check if your placement involves contact with children. Additonal costs will include $65 National Police Clearance, through Australia Post (it is best to apply for this first) and $11 Working With Children Check (WWCC).

This qualification focuses on providing assessment and support to clients with alcohol and drug issues as well as implementing health promotion and community intervention programs. You will learn about interviewing in the initial client assessment and study preventative, educational and other community strategies relevant to the field.

You will also learn skills in working with people who are intoxicated, providing withdrawal services and develop an understanding of the legal and ethical requirements for working in drug and alcohol support services.
