With North Metropolitan TAFE’s painting qualifications, you will gain essential skills and knowledge in processes, materials, tools and equipment used in the industry, and develop specialist expertise in the preparation, application and maintenance of a variety of surface coatings.

You will be trained in a wide range of techniques, including wall-papering, texture coating, staining, spray painting and colour matching skills, in simulated work environments.

Do you have an eye for colour and like to finish what others start?

Painting and decorating is known as a finishing trade, encompassing both residential and commercial areas. It can include new constructions as well as restoring historically significant buildings.

When you complete this Certificate II in Building and Construction pre-apprenticeship you'll be what employers are looking for in an apprentice painter and decorator. Give yourself a better chance of gaining an apprenticeship and a flying start in learning a trade.

Do you want a trades career with an artistic flair?

You will gain the knowledge and skills to work effectively in the signwriting industry using colour and preparing surfaces to produce signage.

Our Midland campus is the only TAFE provider of Signcrafts training in WA. Students have access to the state’s first and only Flecknoe Thermoform/Vacuumform training machine.

Architectural drafters and building designers hold key positions in many sectors of the construction industry. You will learn how to convert an idea into clear, dimensioned drawings, and to provide the builder with the necessary information for construction. With a healthy level of housing, public infrastructure works and mining projects in Western Australia, this is a field with good employment prospects. 

Our plumbing and gas qualifications cover common and specialist areas for the industry, including water, sanitary, drainage, mechanical services, roofing and gas services. You will learn how to use plumbing hand and power tools, work safely on roofs, install water service controls and devices, pump sets and heating systems, cut and join sheet metal, install stormwater and sub-soil drainage systems, fabricate and install steel pressure piping, and install LPG systems. 

Do you want to work with your hands and use your technical mind? North Metropolitan TAFE’s manufacturing, fabrication or welding qualifications will give you the skills and knowledge required to manufacture, assemble and maintain building and mining structures, equipment and engineering components. Once qualified you could find to work in a diverse range of industries including mining, agriculture, transport and manufacturing.

The construction industry is a major sector of the Western Australian workforce and economy, and encompasses a huge variety of career pathways. It is closely aligned to building and includes a large range of trades such as carpentry and joinery, glass, bricklaying and glazing and roof plumbing, as well as an array of fields like site management, line management, estimating and contracting.

 

Our floor and wall tiling qualifications cover waterproofing, tile types, tile glues, tiling patterns and cement mortars, allowing you to develop specialist layout skills across a range of horizontal, vertical, curved sloped and twisted surfaces. You will be able to renovate or work in new buildings, including houses, shops, offices, factories and swimming pools.

North Metropolitan TAFE will spark your career in electrical and electrotechnology. Our courses will give you the skills to interpret electrical drawings, develop circuits, install and maintain electrical components, wiring, and to use equipment and systems in residential and commercial applications. 

Being able to learn how to select, install, set up, test, fault-find, repair and maintain electrical systems and equipment in buildings and premises requires a very specific and complex skillset, which is why qualified and trained people in this industry are always in demand.

Our carpentry and joinery qualifications are suitable for an Australian building apprenticeship pathway, qualifying you for work on both residential and commercial construction sites. You will also qualify for more advanced building and construction courses and for further training towards your builder’s licence. 

Our bricklaying and blocklaying qualifications will give you the necessary skills and knowledge to lay bricks and blocks using different bonds for domestic, commercial, industrial and public buildings, and how to construct ornamental panels, feature walls, arches and columns. 

Our courses will see you ready to read and interpret plans
and specifications, apply basic leveling procedures, carry out measurements and calculations, handle and prepare materials, and use appropriate tools and equipment.
