Early Childhood Aboriginal Skill Set

An exciting start to a rewarding career

The Early Childhood Aboriginal Skill Set is a unique set of three units designed to give Aboriginal students an exciting start toward a career in early childhood.

The course is delivered by a lecturer with knowledge in Aboriginal culture and learning styles and is supported by an Aboriginal mentor. It is based on the Aboriginal Cultural Standards Framework and aims to provide a culturally safe learning environment.

Important information

This course includes a non-assessed work experience placement in an Aboriginal kindy and a practicum in a childcare centre.

You will need to obtain a Working with Children Check card.

Typical timetable

  • Orientation -  9:30am - 12:00pm, Thursday 17 October 2019
  • Followed by 2 weeks work experience placement in an Aboriginal kindy (non-assessed) -  8:30am - 3:00pm, Tuesdays - Thursdays
  • Then classes run for 3 weeks -  9:30am – 2:30pm, Tuesdays - Thursdays
  • Followed by a one week practicum in a childcare centre - 9:00am - 5:30pm, Monday - Friday

Skills for Training and Workplace Coaching

Training within the workplace takes many forms, including individual and group instruction, planning a presentation and reviewing the presentation.
This Skill Set will help you deliver training sessions in workplace or formal learning contexts and will give you the knowledge and skills needed to

  • train others within the workplace, 
  • teach, train and assess (under supervision) within the Vocational Education Training (VET) sector

You may currently be 

  • working in a role in HR where you are required to conduct employee induction
  • a supervisor who provides training for staff on policies and procedures
  • a staff member who has skills or experience that may be relevant to and benefit other staff
  • wanting to provide training under supervision in a VET environment

Successful completion of this Skill Set will give you credit towards TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment as you will cover the following units BSBMM401 Make a presentation and TAEDEL301 Provide work skill instruction

Work placement

As part of this course you will complete a 120 hour supervised work placement in a facility providing services to disabled clients. Before you start work placement you will need to obtain a police clearance (approx. $72). 

Important information

It is strongly recommended that you see your doctor about having a flu vaccination.

Typical Timetable

Full-time - 3 days per week on campus for 15 weeks followed by 4 week full-time industry placement.
Part-time - 1 day per week on campus for 3 terms and the a full-time placement.
Please note NMT also offers a partnership program with industry - 5 weeks intensive on campus program followed by 2 days per week industry placement plus 1 day per week on campus for the remainder of the semester.

Entrance Requirements

We recommend that you are over the age of 18 before enrolling in this course as the fieldwork placement and employment outcomes are very limited for students under the age of 18.

Work placement

* You will need to be enrolled in the appropriate units to be offered a work placement - it is not a standard for all enrolments.

Important information

Eligibility for supervised work placement is subject to obtaining a satisfactory Police Clearance. You will also need a Working with Children Check if your placement involves contact with children. Additonal costs will include $65 National Police Clearance, through Australia Post (it is best to apply for this first) and $11 Working With Children Check (WWCC).
