DPH Surveys’ commitment to boosting diversity in the surveying industry was highlighted last Friday, with the presentation of scholarships to two female surveying students at North Metropolitan TAFE’s East Perth campus.

Vanessa Tomlinson and Doreen Wan were the deserving recipients of the scholarships, each awarded $3,000 from DPH Surveys for their tuition fees and resources to complete their Diploma of Surveying.

Vanessa said she was very thankful for the opportunity and was honoured to receive the scholarship.
"After becoming an early childhood educator, I decided to take a new challenge. I like learning new technologies, drafting, operating machinery, and precision tools. I have always wanted to pursue a professional career and surveying is definitely the right choice."

"I know I still have much to learn, but with support from the industry and encouragement, I know I can accomplish my academic goals and get ready to begin my surveying career," she said.

Doreen said she felt excited to be recognised by DPH Surveys for her hard work and looked forward to working in the surveying world as she finished off her studies.

"Since I was young I've been interested in the various construction, mining and engineering projects, and surveying provides me with a good opportunity to work on these projects," she said.

As scholarship recipients, the students will be appointed a surveying mentor who will offer regular catchups and provide valuable insight into this exciting and growing industry.  Vanessa and Doreen will be offered summer and holiday field/site work opportunities throughout the year to complement their academic studies at North Metropolitan TAFE.

DPH Executive Manager Louise Hannifer said DPH were committed to engaging and providing opportunities for women who make up less than 2% of the Surveying workforce.

"These scholarships are just one small piece in the bigger picture of greater diversity in surveying and spatial sciences," she said.

"I am very confident that the scholarship recipients have a bright future in surveying and spatial science ahead of them."

Our Jobs and Skill Centre worked with DPH Surveys to initiate the scholarships and boost the profile of surveying as a desirable and rewarding career.
