Ink Animation, formerly based in Cambodia and run by Perth local Justin Stewart, began the partnership with NMTAFE Joondalup late last year after Mr Stewart returned to Perth after 10 years away due to COVID-19.

Mr Stewart wanted to give back to his home state and provide work experience to students looking for a career in 2D animation, with NMTAFE’s animation courses providing the perfect fit.

“I would love to see the 2D animation industry grow here in Perth. The quality of work provided by TAFE students is excellent,” he said.

“I'm confident that the agreement between Ink Animation and NMTAFE will give aspiring artists industry experience and significantly increase their prospects for employment in animation.”

He said Ink Animation was proud to partner with NMTAFE and provide opportunities for animation students to work on feature films and series for major streaming platforms.

Through its extended studio relationships, Ink Animation’s artists have received credits on three feature films submitted for Oscar consideration in 2020, with one feature, Klaus accepted as an Animated Feature Film Nominee.

Ink Animation also works with Titmouse, an independent Emmy-award-winning animation production company. Projects completed with Ink Animation by NMTAFE students for Titmouse are airing or set to air on several streaming services.

NMTAFE Digital Media and IT lecturer Travis Badge said the agreement with Ink Animation provides students with quality work experience during their studies to set them up in their future employment.

“Being able to offer students the opportunity to gain real-life experience on such high-profile projects is second to none; I’d recommend the course to everyone looking to boost their portfolio of work,” he said.

Screen and Media (Animation & Visualisation) Advanced Diploma 2020 graduate Patrick Hubbard was ecstatic to be able to work on such exciting projects.

“It’s the opportunity of a lifetime, I never thought I’d get the chance to work on shows of such high quality that air across the world during my studies,” he said.

“Once you finish the TAFE course you will definitely stand out from the crowd as you have actual experience working on big projects with industry professionals.”

Applications for the Advanced Diploma of Screen and Media (Animation & Visualisation) at NMTAFE Joondalup Campus are now open for 2021.
