7 November 2022

Today marks the start of National Recycling Week, a week to raise awareness about important environmental issues and to encourage individuals and businesses to do their part to protect the environment.

Here at NMTAFE, we have initiatives both small and large aimed at reducing our impact on the environment as part of our Sustainability Action Plan.

Departments ranging from film and TV to trades to community services and education have significantly reduced paper use by moving the majority of work online.

Environmental sustainability is also an important element of our teaching with the aim of encouraging the future workforce to consider their impact on the planet.

Horticulture students are creating a compost heap and worm farm for our Joondalup campus and our Perth fashion department send their textile waste to UPPAREL for their up-cycling initiatives.

As part of our Sustainability Action Plan, larger scale initiatives are also underway or have been delivered.

Replacement of older lighting with LEDs has been carried out across facilities at our Midland, Joondalup, Balga, Clarkson and Mount Lawley campuses while Perth campus had its air conditioning and lighting system upgraded in Building 2 last year, reducing energy consumption.

Lighting in our Live Music Venue at Leederville campus has been replaced by modern cool lighting that uses less power while also providing students with access to the latest equipment to train on.

These are just some of the initiatives carried out at NMTAFE with more to come as we do our part to reduce emissions.
