Success at Sydney WorldSkills

WS Winners.

North Metropolitan TAFE students competed against fellow students from around Australia in the recent WorldSkills Australia 2018 National Championship in Sydney and three came home winners.

  • Winners included Kaleb Milson, VETis Metals and Engineering (Gold); Anthony Musca, Graphic Design Technology (Bronze); and Matthew Dempsey, Sheetmetal Work (Bronze).
  • North Metro TAFE Floor and Wall Tiling Lecturer Ron Simeon was awarded WorldSkills Life Membership for inspiring competitors for decades as a mentor, expert and judge.
  • Western Australia also won the VETiS Shield, which recognises the best performing state or territory for VETiS competitors.

“I never cease to be awed by the amazing commitment that our students and staff make to competitions such as WorldSkills,” said Julie Zappa, North Metro TAFE’s General Manager Training.

“Their achievements are testament to the high quality skills they have obtained throughout their training which will no doubt see them succeed in their chosen careers.”

The biennial WorldSkills competition aims to find the best young apprentices, trainees, tradespeople and VET (vocational education and training) graduates in the country by testing them over three days with set tasks, strict judging criteria and a race against the clock.

Some of the national winners will go on to represent Australia in the WorldSkills international championships, or “tradie Olympics”, in Kazan, Russia next year.

The competition included categories for fully-qualified workers as well as VET in School (VETis) categories.

It was part of careers expo Skills Show Australia, which was held at ICC Sydney, June 2-4, and welcomed tens of thousands of schoolchildren, parents and teachers.
