Up-Skilling WA Miners

Roy Hill and North Metropolitan TAFE are working together to meet mining skill demands by providing apprenticeships and traineeships to Roy Hill employees. 

  • More than 150 Roy Hill employees will be offered traineeships in Surface Extraction Operations and Resource Processing to prepare them for job roles including mobile plant operators, mineral processing operators and port operators. 
  • 32-year old employee Jana Buvari is learning to maintain the communication systems on Roy Hill’s railway as part of her Electronics and Communications apprenticeship with North Metropolitan TAFE (see video).

Roy Hill, winners of the WA Training Awards Large Employer of the Year, continues to find ways to deliver quality training for its staff by partnering with North Metropolitan TAFE to deliver targeted apprenticeships and traineeships specific to the mining industry.

A Roy Hill spokesperson said, “North Metro TAFE understands our training needs, and thinks innovatively to provide flexible training delivery solutions, tailored for our organisation. The ability to provide meaningful training opportunities to staff on FIFO rosters is especially critical in the mining industry."

North Metropolitan TAFE has worked closely with the Roy Hill Training team to design training and development programs to meet the needs of both the business and employees alike. Many of the traineeship participants are receiving training opportunities for the first time in their working careers.  

The Roy Hill spokesperson continued, “We appreciate the way North Metro TAFE has built leadership and innovation development programs into our traineeships - key skills required for the future of mining”.

North Metro TAFE’s Managing Director, Michelle Hoad said: “The mining industry has voiced concern about a widening skills gap and the need to up-skill and re-train their workforce. 

“North Metro TAFE values the commitment that Roy Hill makes to developing a capable workforce and we look forward to using our expertise in innovative training delivery to assist them to develop highly skilled employees.”
