Maybe you can ask that!

To celebrate Harmony Week, North Metropolitan TAFE (NMTAFE) last week hosted a special “You Can’t Ask That!” style panel session at our Perth campus.

  • NMTAFE students and staff participated in the session to share their life experiences with the audience, to improve the understanding of people with a disability and challenge negative stereotypes.
  • Harmony Week celebrates Australia’s multiculturalism and promotes inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural or linguistic background.
  • 2019 marks the 20-year anniversary of harmony celebrations.

Student panel members, Tayla Taseff and Russell Perring, along with staff member Andrew Potts, bravely and openly discussed the importance of people not having preconceived ideas about people with a disability.

“Wow, the girl in the wheelchair can talk!” was a common experience that Tayla shared with the audience.

The panel session promoted open conversation around the treatment of people with a disability in our community. This was particularly topical during Harmony Week as NMTAFE celebrates inclusiveness and respect for all Australians.

The College ensures that people with disability have access to services, programs and facilities that will allow them to achieve their career and educational goals. Our disability support services are adapted to suit the individual needs of each student with the aim of developing their skills and improving job prospects.  Harmony Day Audience.jpg
