Kids kick-start resources career

North Metropolitan TAFE (NMTAFE) welcomed Rio Tinto, Sandfire Resources, St Barbara Limited, Thiess and Wood to our Perth (Northbridge) campus for the Get Into Resources event.

  • Get Into Resources aims to inspire young people to consider a career in the resources industry through hands-on STEM activities, workshops, tours and presentations. NMTAFE has been involved in the event since it began in 2012.
  •  Over three-days, almost 400 students from 12 secondary schools across the Perth metropolitan and South West region attended the event.

The event caters to both VET and ATAR bound students, with two streams running concurrently throughout the day. This allows students to take part in activities most relevant to their future career.
The activities and interactive sessions are led by mining and resource industry professionals who offer students unique insights into their professions.
Once again, favourite activities among students was the tour of NMTAFE’s CUT Mine, a unique simulated facility that provides students the opportunity to experience an underground mine.

Another favourite activity was the virtual welder where students use VR technology to learn real-life welding skills.

NMTAFE was also pleased to welcome Hon Sue Ellery, Minister for Education and Training who toured the event on Wednesday morning, and Hon Bill Johnston, Minister for Minister for Mines and Petroleum, Energy and Industrial Relations, who gave Friday’s key note address.
