Indigenous businesses supporting their own

Last year, Emily decided to leave her job in business administration and work towards a career where she could make a difference.

  • 24-year-old Aboriginal student Emily Richards is well on her way to becoming an Enrolled Nurse thanks to the support of Indigenous company Ballardong Medical.
  • Sponsorship from the Malaga-based first aid and medical supplies business, has contributed to Emily’s course fees and allowed her to receive additional tutoring by mentors at North Metropolitan TAFE’s Koolark Centre for Aboriginal students.
  • In recent years, Aboriginal students have benefitted from sponsorship by St John of God Healthcare, The Rotary Club of Swan District and local Aboriginal business Dangoo.
  • The Koolark Centre welcomes sponsorship from businesses with a desire to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.

“I’ve got a few nurses and midwives in my family who are always up and about, thinking on their feet and they seem to love their job,” she said.

Throughout 2018, Emily completed a Certificate III in Health Services Assistance (Acute Care) with 80 hours prac in a nursing home and a Certificate IV in Preparation for Health and Nursing Studies at the Mt Lawley campus.

The sponsorship from Ballardong Medical contributed to Emily’s course fees and allowed her to receive additional tutoring by mentors at the Koolark Centre. The tutoring developed Emily’s numeracy and led to her passing the Basic Key Skills Builder (BKSB) entrance assessment for the Diploma of Enrolled Nursing.

“The sponsorship from Ballardong Medical helped me a lot because I live out of home and wasn’t getting any financial assistance, so having my course fees taken care of was a big relief,” said Emily.

Ballardong Medical’s Director Gavin McKay said that supporting the education aspirations of Indigenous students was part of the company’s commitment to social and community improvement.

”These students are our future workforce so it’s important that they get the support while they are learning, to give them the absolute best chance to succeed,” he said.
