Governing Council member named mining leader

North Metropolitan TAFE Governing Council member, Meryl Jones, was recently recognised as one of the 2018 ‘100 Global Inspirational Women in Mining’ at an event in London.

  • The ‘100 Global Inspirational Women in Mining’ book aims to showcase the range of female talent within the global mining industry and to identify inspirational role models to encourage future generations of women to consider mining as a career choice.
  • Meryl has been a member of the WA resources industry for over 30 years. Her career history includes mining, exploration, land management, resource analysis, business development, and (closest to her heart), advocacy and mentoring. Meryl is currently Principal Business Development with St Barbara Ltd.

This year a record 642 nominations were received from around the world, highlighting the valuable contribution women are making to the mining industry on a daily basis.

“This book is a living history of women working in mining and through their stories we learn how they have addressed challenges, empowered others and forged rewarding and important careers in the sector,” said Carole Cable, Chairman of Women in Mining.

Meryl’s passion is resources education, she is an Executive Director for Earth Science Western Australia and Founder and Patron of Get Into Resources, an event which has been sponsored by and hosted at North Metropolitan TAFE since 2012.

“We need to encourage schools, training organisations and universities to understand the impact digital disruption and automation will have on the resources industry and ensure we are prepared,” said Meryl.

“STEM skills are declining in our student population, particularly with girls and most often in late high school when peer pressure and broader community influences drive students towards non-STEM subjects.”

It’s a fantastic asset to have Meryl’s skills and knowledge on North Metropolitan TAFE’s Governing Council.
