Giving back to the community

Last week IT and Media lecturers at our Joondalup campus signed an MOU with Lions Club International that will support liveworks projects for our Certificate IV in Networking and Certificate IV in Cybersecurity students.

  • North Metropolitan TAFE approached Lions Club Vic Park PC Recycling (subset of Lions Club International) to support them in initiatives that recycle PCs and networking equipment.
  • The equipment gets donated to youth groups, ethnic centres and underprivileged townships in Western Australia and around the world.
  • This supports the Lions International aims of sustainably protecting and restoring our environment to improve the well-being of all communities.

“What started out as a simple request for some student real-world experience for one semester has turned into a signed MOU and the ability to service hundreds of PCs and related equipment per year for a worthy cause,” said Alan Johns, Head of Programs (Information Technology).

This project will provide the students with a range of outcomes, including maintenance and troubleshooting, inventory management, securing PC hardware and securely wiping data and refreshing by installing open-source operating systems.

“I thank Steve Oakley (lecturer in Cyber) and Gerhard Labuschagne (IT & Media technician) for taking the lead with this and making it a success.”

Well done to all those involved!
