General Education

Our general education qualifications help improve your literacy or numeracy skills so you can get a job or gain entry into a university, TAFE or another tertiary education institution. Covering functional literacy, goal setting and implementation, interpersonal skills, everyday mathematics, humanities and more, our programs are practical and involve real projects, which will help you learn faster and better.

Our programs are designed to meet the needs of students with different learning styles and needs. You will have classes with students from diverse backgrounds, such as those that have English as an Additional Language (EAL), youth, people recovering from long term illness or injury, or adults wanting to study vocational skills, which will enrich your life and open up a world of opportunities and possibilities for you.

Our New Opportunities for Women (NOW) program is designed to fit in with school hours and holidays. Our Certificate II in General Education for Adults and Certificate III in General Education for Adults are offered as off-campus learning (external).

BKSB Support Skill Set

Learn and practice the required skills before sitting for the BKSB test

This Skill Set provides you with the opportunity to develop your skills and prepare for the BKSB (Basic Key Skills Builder) assessment.

BKSB® is a Commonwealth approved online assessment tool that provides an overview of your learning strengths and determines your English and mathematics levels. 
This assessment tool, the BKSB (Basic Key Skills Builder) test is used for entrance into competitive courses like North Metropolitan TAFE's Diploma of Nursing and Diploma of Anaesthetic Technology.

It is also used to determine suitability for a VET Student Loan to assist with paying for study in Diploma and Advanced Diploma courses.

To gain entry into the Diploma of Nursing or the Diploma of Anaesthetic Technology, you will need to achieve Exit level 3 (working at level 4) scores or higher. 
Our BKSB Support Skill Set provides you with the opportunity to develop your skills and prepare for the BKSB assessment.

You'll be able to learn and practice the required skills before sitting for the test.

This skill set will provide:

  • weekly online classes to practice, participate in tutorials and ask questions
  • access to maths and English practice tests
  • access to learner guides and other resources
  • access to online systems to extend practice

An introduction to the business world

Gain skills in word processing, spreadsheets, mail procedures, preparing and processing accounts and the operation of a range of general office equipment. Offered as a traineeship, or for people with a disability.

We also offer a version of this course as a program for people with an intellectual or learning disability, designed specifically to provide these students with the skills needed to access and maintain employment. Kick start your education and training or access help in finding work

This course, taught by highly experienced lecturers, will build on your existing communication and personal skills, and help you to develop employment opportunities. We offer a youth program, an 18+ career booster program, and a course for people with a disability.

Do you want to kick start your education and training?

You could improve your reading, writing, maths and personal skills as well as enhance your employment opportunities.

These GATE courses are available for anyone.

At our Leederville campus we offer a Career Booster focus while at Joondalup campus we offer a Youth Program aimed at helping people aged between 15 - 18.

Continuous enrolment is available for online and off campus (external) delivery only. You have six months to complete the course from your enrolment date.

North Metropolitan TAFE offers this course as part of the Launchpad program - a dual qualification where you also study 22237VIC Certificate II in General Education for Adults in a one year program.

Through Launchpad you will gain the practical skills and knowledge to prepare for work and perform a range of administrative tasks. Launchpad is specially designed for students aged 15-17 years old and offers intensive career exploration as well as a work placement where you get to put you skills into practice.
