Safety testing of electrical cord assemblies and cord connected equipment

If you have to undertake testing, tagging and reporting of portable/hand held low voltage electrical equipment using a portable appliance tester (PAT) as part of your role in the workplace then this skill set will equip you with the tools you need. 

North Metropolitan TAFE's skill set covers safety testing of electrical cord assemblies and cord connected equipment. It encompasses working safely, using portable apparatus tester, applying tagging, arranging for repair of faulty equipment and complete testing documentation.

The two units covered in this skill set are:

UEENEEE101A Apply occupational health and safety regulations, codes and practices in the workplace
UEENEEP026A Conduct in-service safety testing of electrical cord connected equipment

Topics include:

  • The reason behind testing and tagging
  • WorkSafe Legislation for testing and tagging
  • Working through AS3760 in-service testing and tagging
  • Identification of Class I and Class II appliances
  • Creation of a register
  • Using an appliance tester
  • Perform visual inspection on cords, plugs & appliances
  • Explain test and tag usage
  • Awareness of safety practices when performing tests

The RCD (Residual-current device) component covers basic electrical theory, how an RCD works, what records need to be kept and how to correctly test an RCD device.

Please note course duration is one and a half days, (day 1, 8:30am - 4:30pm; day 2, 8:30am - 11:30am) and classes are run subject to numbers - refer to How to apply for more information. Minimum course numbers 5, maximum 12.
