The Arabic Language "Allughah 'al arabiyyah

Arabic is spoken in over twenty countries from North-West Africa to the Arabian Gulf which makes it one of the most widely used languages in the world. There are three different kinds of Arabic that are written and spoken.

  • Classical Arabic - this is the language of the Qur'aan and classical literature. Its structure is similar to the modern standard but the style and much of the vocabulary is archaic. To learn the modern classical Arabic it is essential to go into rather complex grammar.
  • Modern Classical Arabic - this is the universal language of the Arab world understood by all Arabic speakers. Almost all written material is in modern standard as are formal TV programs, talks, etc.
  • Colloquial Arabic – these are the spoken languages of the different regions of the Arab world. They vary the most in everyday words and expressions.

The Arabic covered in this course is a mixture of the modern classical and the colloquial Arabic to lessen the complexity of the grammar. Students completing these courses will be able to understand and be understood by all Arabic speakers.

Arabic Beginners Stage 1 is a general introduction to the language, its sound and writing system and some general information on the countries in which it is spoken.

Our world is getting smaller due to the rapid development of telecommunication, the expansion of international trade and the ease of air travel. In this environment, Chinese can be counted as one of the most important languages to learn. Modern Standard Chinese is an official language of the United Nations.

Chinese is spoken by over one billion people in China as well as by millions of other people all over the world. The language is not so difficult to learn, having quite a simple structure, with no plural forms and no past or future tenses. China is the fastest growing economy in the world, with huge investments in the iron ore industry in Western Australia. For some years now, people with skills in Chinese have been in great demand both at home and overseas – especially in the areas of the service industry, in international and company law, economics, engineering and architecture.

Chinese (Mandarin) Beginners Stage 1  is a general introduction to the language, its sound and writing system and some general information on the countries in which it is spoken. Wherever possible, the course is tailored to meet the needs and interests of the group. Therefore, some variations to course may occur.

Study the Diploma of Graphic Design and you will develop advanced techniques in InDesign and Illustrator and use them to design annual reports, corporate identities, packaging and other press-ready artwork.
The Diploma also provides in-depth exposure to web design using WordPress, user interfaces, an introduction to game graphics using Unity and the current trend of UX Design (User Experience).

You will also learn 3D modelling using Trimble Sketchup to assist in visualising packaging, signage and concept art and bring them to life with Octane renderer. The Diploma course also gives you the opportunity to continue explorations into concept development, creative thinking, online social media advertising and digital illustration using Corel Painter.

We usually run several live briefs with external clients, mainly not-for-profit organisations, to replicate real client experiences. From this exposure you will also learn about the business aspect of graphic design.

The Diploma paves the way for the Advanced Diploma, and at Diploma level it is expected that you will work at a certain level of autonomy regarding research and time management. It is not uncommon for students at this level to gain employment in the industry, where you have access to workplace assessment or Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

The Advanced Diploma will make you ‘industry-ready’ and during the course you will develop a stunning portfolio which culminates in the end-of-year grad show. Our grad show is the highlight of the year and is attended by industry stakeholders, many of whom are alumni who are now leading the industry.

You can choose from two streams - User Experience Design or Illustration. This means that although everyone does the common core units there is the opportunity to specialise in electives. Our industry consultation outlines the demand for illustrative design as well as a more User Experience/ User Interface approach.

We integrate live briefs with real clients. An example of the high standard of work our students produce is our involvement with the International Society of Typographic Designers (ISTD) where our students have won international awards and our participation in Award School. All students become members of the Australian Graphic Design Association (AGDA), the industry’s leading body.

We also host the annual AGDA folio review where feedback is received from industry members in how to best structure your portfolio. In addition to this we conduct industry visits and host guest speakers who shed light on the latest trends in our industry.

This course is demanding, but the rewards and satisfaction are great. Many of our graduates go on to enrol into a degrees in design and receive advanced standing at all WA universities. We have pathways and agreements with Curtin University in particular.
