Get qualified to deliver training and assessment in the Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector

This qualification is for individuals responsible for delivering accredited training and assessing the skill levels of VET students either in a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) or within a work environment as part of a structured VET program.

On successful completion you will have the skills to train and assess competence in a workplace, a registered training organisation or in a community setting.

To enrol in this course you will need to demonstrate that you have current vocational skills, knowledge and expertise that you will be passing on to others after you become a qualified trainer.

This course is delivered in four clusters through a mix of both face-to-face workshops and online structured learning and assessment activities. You will need to complete all clusters to obtain the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.

Please note Clusters B, C and D below require you to have access to current VET students undertaking a nationally recognised qualification directly linked to YOUR industry qualification/skill and background. This is to meet specific assessment requirements and to meet the Standards for RTOs 2015.

Entrance Requirements

The TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment requires people entering the program to be able to demonstrate vocational competency in their proposed teaching and assessing area. To meet the assessment requirements of many units in this qualification, you will need access to authentic learning situations and learners in the area of your vocational competence.

Important information

Please note you will not be able to enrol in Cluster B, C or D if you cannot prove:

  1. Vocational competency in your industry area, which you will need to verify (e.g. Trade certificate/qualification/alternative evidence).
  2. That you have access, or you have arranged to have access, to VET students undertaking nationally accredited training.

The “annual fees cap” means that full-fee paying students will only pay a maximum of $1,200 (plus resource fee) and concession-fee paying students or those aged 15-24 years will only pay up to $400 (plus resource fee).

These fees are estimates only and are for the entire course for students enrolling on a full-time basis.
- Fees might differ between courses delivered at different campuses due to the elective units included in the course study plan or adapting courses to meet local industry needs.
- Fees may also differ for each individual student depending on the units of study selected, prior qualifications and recognition of prior learning.
- Fees are payable at enrolment each semester for the units enrolled for that period. Some year-long courses might have a bigger fee load in the first semester. 
- Proof of concession must be presented to access concession rates if eligible.
- For secondary school aged persons (in 2020, students born on or after 1 July 2002 who are at least 15 years old) undertaking training that is not part of a VET Delivered to Secondary Schools program, the maximum course fee chargeable in 2020 is $420 plus the resource fees and discretionary fees. 
- Prices quoted include resource fees, but do not include material fees such as the cost of books, uniforms and students personal equipment.
- The course fee cap applicable to Diplomas and Advanced Diplomas only applies during the current calendar year, so fees might differ for students enrolling in semester 2.
- VET Student Loans Eligible Courses and Caps may be subject to changes implemented by the Australian Government 
- Concessions and Secondary School Age cap do not apply to commercial courses, or Foundation Programs (ESL, General Education, etc.)

Delivery location, important dates and study options

During your course of study, NMTAFE may use a variety of learning practices to ensure you get the best outcome for your learning journey.
This may include online learning, face-to-face classroom, laboratory/workshop delivery, work placement or a combination of these, depending on which is most appropriate.
