Develop the skills and knowledge to assist teaching staff

This course will provide you with a customised program in learning support to prepare you for roles such as an education assistant working in a school. You will learn to provide support to a classroom teacher for children from kindergarten to Year 12.

As part of this qualification you will undertake a supervised work placement where you will be able to apply the skills and knowledge you have learned in a classroom setting. Students are required to obtain a Working with Children Check and a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check (Education Department WA) before attending the work placement. 

The online delivery will be done via Collaborate sessions (on Blackboard), which are live classes run online with a lecturer taking you through the training.

A First Aid unit forms part of this course, please see the Important Information section below for details about this unit.

Half-price

This qualification is directly aligned with priority industry areas where jobs are today, and into the future. As part of the state government Lower fees, local skills program, through to 31 December 2025 you'll only pay half the tuition fees (plus resource fee) capped at $1,200; or $400 if you're aged 15—24 or eligible for a concession.

Online delivery
Collaborate sessions (on Blackboard) are live classes run online as per the timetable, with a lecturer facilitating your training. These sessions are recorded for students to access.

As part of this qualification, you will undertake a supervised work placement where you will be able to apply the skills and knowledge you have learned in a classroom setting.

Before attending work placement you will be required to obtain:

  • Working with Children Check
  • Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check (Education Department of WA)

You will also need to provide proof of your Covid vaccination status.

In the first week of study, you will be required to sit a literacy and numeracy test to ascertain your suitability for the course.

Please note one of the units required to achieve this qualification, HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an education and care setting is not offered within the Education Support area at North Metropolitan TAFE, you will need to complete this unit with First Aid training provider such as St John Ambulance and provide evidence of completion to gain credit for the unit.
