In this course, you will learn how to provide direct care to clients who are unable to care for themselves due to ill health or disability in a community setting. You'll gain an insight into the aged care and home and community care sector and undertake 120 hours of supervised work placement where you get to put your skills into practice.

All of our Home and Community Care qualifications can be completed in the workplace. This means you get the most relevant skills and the opportunity to form industry contacts.

Half-price

This qualification is directly aligned with priority industry areas where jobs are today, and into the future. As part of the state government Lower fees, local skills program, from 1 January 2021 through to 31 December 2025 you'll only pay half the tuition fees (plus resource fee) capped at $1,200; or $400 if you're aged 15—24 or eligible for a concession.

School Leaver Non-School Leaver AQF
OLNA or NAPLAN 9 Band 8 C Grades in Year 10 English and Maths or equivalent Certificate I or Certificate II

Prior to enrolment into this qualification, please consider:
•    If you are under 18 years of age
•    Any criminal conviction as it will appear on your National Police Certificate (compulsory to obtain)
•    Any difficulty in communicating with either workers or clients. (I.e. difficulty with written or spoken English)
•    Manual tasks involved in personal care work, including lifting 
•    Ability to set aside between four and five days/week for attendance at classes, work placement and study
•    Likelihood of finding it difficult or distressing to provide personal care such as toileting and bathing for clients of any gender and varying ages
•    Ability to attend your work placement regularly and reliably
 

This qualification includes 120 hours of supervised work placement in a home and/or community facility. Students may have up to one week additional placement in a community care setting.

In order to start your work placement you will need the following:

  • Immunisations and to provide evidence of vaccinations (cost will vary depending on your doctor and what vaccinations are needed)
  • Polo Shirt (approx. $29)
  • Police Clearance (approx. $72) 
  • Working with Children’s Check (WWC) 
  • First Aid Certificate (recommended)

You will need to attend class three days per week also complete two units via online study, for one semester when you study full-time.
This will be followed by 120 hours full-time work placement. 

As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately five hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including private study, assignment preparation, and research.

You will need to have the basic technical requirements for at-home study. If you don’t have access to a computer and WiFi at home, we recommend using our library computers during library hours.

On your first day you should bring your North Metropolitan TAFE confirmation of enrolment, your student ID and stationery (pen and exercise book).
As a student you will also have additional costs associated with your study, for example, you will need to obtain a National Police Clearance, and you will need to pay for stationery, printing and other materials required for your assignments.
