If you’re looking for a hands-on career in the rail industry, this course will give you the practical skills and knowledge to get started.
You’ll develop the skills to work safely in the rail infrastructure environment, follow established procedures and contribute as part of a rail team. You’ll learn how to work safely in the rail corridor, use tools and equipment, handle materials, and support track construction and maintenance activities.
Your training will take place at NMTAFE’s METRONET Trades Training Centre in Midland, where you’ll gain practical experience in a simulated rail yard environment. You’ll focus on track work and develop the confidence to apply your skills in a realistic rail setting.
As Western Australia continues to invest in passenger, freight and regional rail infrastructure, your practical skills can help you take the first step towards a career keeping WA’s rail network moving.
On successful completion, you could pursue entry-level opportunities as a track worker, installer or maintainer.
- Identify hazards and work safely within the rail corridor
- Identify railway layouts, features and components
- Care and use of hand tools and minor mechanical equipment in the rail environment
- Measure, mark up and cut and install rail
- Install railway sleepers and fastenings.
