Start your Japanese language and culture journey

This beginner-level course will give you Japanese language skills and intercultural knowledge to enable you to communicate in Japanese in basic social and workplace situations, both in Australia and overseas. It is design for students who have little or no prior knowledge of the Japanese language. 

You'll develop basic speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills to develop an understanding of Japanese culture and society.  Our experienced lecturers are passionate and focused on creating an enjoyable learning experience.

After successful completion of this certificate you can continue your Japanese journey with the Certificate III in Applied Language (Japanese).

​​Proficiency in basic Japanese language - communicate effectively in basic Japanese conversations, including greetings, introductions, and simple questions and answers. ​

Cultural awareness - develop an understanding of Japanese culture and social norms, which will be useful when interacting with Japanese clients, colleagues or visiting Japan.

​Customer service skills - apply a basic knowledge of Japanese language and culture to enhance customer satisfaction and lead to increased business opportunities, in industries where there is significant interaction with Japanese clients or customers, such as tourism, hospitality, or international trade.

​Communication skills - develop oral and written communication skills which can be transferred to a range of industries and settings.

​Time management - manage your time effectively to complete assessments, practice speaking and listening, and study new vocabulary and grammar.

Online

This course requires your attendance for online scheduled classes for 2 days per week when studied full time and is delivered on Tuesday and Thursday from 5:00pm - 8:00pm online. 

At-home study

As well as the online component, you will need to complete additional study of around 4 -6 hours each week outside of scheduled classes, including private study, assignment preparation, and research.

This course is taught online, a suitable device with WiFi at home is recommended. Our library computers are also available during library hours.

As a student you will also have additional costs associated with your study, for example text books and stationery, printing and other materials required for your assignments.
