Counselling

Our counselling qualification focuses on community services work. This means students gain the skills to support a wide range of clients, including people from culturally diverse backgrounds and community groups. You may provide support in areas such as mental health, drug and alcohol abuse, family and domestic violence, housing within welfare or government agencies.

If you hold a Diploma of Community Services, Youth Work or Mental Health or, you are already working in these industries, North Metropolitan TAFE is delivering skills and knowledge to help you acquire counselling skills as an additional skill to your core profession.
You'll gain skills needed to work with clients experiencing complex situations, requiring advanced interviewing and communication skills in a community services setting.

The units covered focus on communicating effectively, working within a case management framework, applying core counselling methodologies to assist your clients and establishing and maintaining positive relationships in community services work.
On completion of these additional units, graduates of a Diploma of Community Services will also achieve the Diploma of Counselling.

Training will be delivered through a combination of online and on campus sessions.
The online delivery will be done via Collaborate sessions (on Blackboard), which are live online classes facilitated by a lecturer taking you through the training.
On campus sessions will be run in smaller groups in class where there are practical skills and assessments to be performed.
