More choices for a longer life

What is  CTA?

If you are 45 or over and would like to return to work or up-skill to meet the demands of the current industries Career Transition Assistance (CTA) is the prefect training for you. CTA is an Australian Government initiative supporting job seekers 45-years and older to build confidence and identify current skills to transfer to industries on demand. North Metropolitan TAFE delivers CTA across the northern employment region of Perth employing a team of practiced professionals working together to identify your skills, previous experience and vocational fields so you can explore opportunities to re-enter the labour market confidently.

This program is funded by the Department of Employment, Skills, Small and Family Business.

How CTA works for you


As a Career Transition Assistance participant you will undertake active project based learning to be able to:

  • Critically analyse your current skills
  • Research particular industry requirements and skills sets
  • Work collaboratively and assess your team working skills
  • Assess your current skills and identify training gaps to work in a particular industry
  • Identify your current skills and how they are transferable to different industries.

As a CTA participant you will also undertake relevant employer visits and have the opportunity to undertake work experience.

Is CTA for me?

As a CTA participant we help you get:  

  • Assistance with transferring your current skills and experience to a competitive industry
  • Assess your employment options considering your skills and life experiences
  • Identify your skills set and  address the selection criteria to apply for suitable jobs 
  • Use digital technologies and social media to market yourself and to create networks 
  • Update your resume to make it current.

Preparing your pathway plan



CTA_PathwayPlan.jpgAfter initial referral, as a participant you will meet with a pathways advisor, and then with the facilitator, to map out a suitable career pathway plan. A range of career advice software programs suitable for mature age worker, such as JIIG-CAL, is available to assist you. Dedicated and comfortable rooms at each campus location make participants feel comfortable throughout the process. 

Ongoing support

You can be assured you have ongoing support after the completion of your training so you can fulfill your career pathway plan. In addition, an exit interview will establish possible suitable work experience opportunities.

Currently North Metropolitan TAFE successfully places around 100 participants each term with local employers.

Tailored career assistance

CTA participants will undertake active project-based learning in the following areas. This modular approach allows for flexible rolling intake. Throughout, participants will be actively involved in:

  • Critical analysis of current skills 
  • Research of particular industry requirements and skill sets
  • Working collaboratively and assessing their own team work skills.
Course description

Duration and study mode

75 hours over eight (8) weeks




1. Shifting perceptions Participants understand the job market for mature aged job seekers. Inbound guest speakers from the relevant NMT portfolios help to build client confidence and motivation. 10
2. Your strengths and market value Through group and peer work, participants learn about the changing world of work and their transferrable skills. Outbound local employer visit assist clients to understand the Australian job market. 10
3. Finding suitable work Identifying skills gaps and planning to up skill. Group or individual projects will be based around setting work timelines. 10
4. Getting organised Focus on the key core ‘employability skills’ and work on preparing resumes, referees and qualifications. 10
5. Shortlisting jobs Participants learn how to prepare, and maintain a job search contact list to place in their Career Pathway Plan and research online sites. 10
6. Interviews Role plays and watching authentic material allow for interview preparation and practice. 15
7. Marketing yourself Participants learn about self- marketing as a mature age applicant and practice various approaches. 10

What this means for you

Access to library

As a CTA Program participant, you will have access to all North Metropolitan TAFE (NMTAFE) libraries located at Balga, Joondalup, Leederville, Mt Lawley, Midland and Perth campuses.

This includes:

  • An Office 365 account
  • Computer access
  • Access to online learning resources
  • Facilitator (teacher) and library staff assistance as required
  • Access to the Jobs and Skills Centres.

You will experience direct engagement with local employers through alternative delivery methods.

Online participation

Once familiar with Office 365, you will be able to participate online with a Facilitator through Microsoft Teams.

Self- study

One day a week is self-study - allowing you to do parts of the program online in your own time.

Paper based resources (optional) for additional support

Upon request participants can have access to printed resources.

Training and employment

Technology and digital skills

In this modern world, digital literacy is very important to stay competitive in the labour force.

As a CTA participant, you will have the opportunity to experience technology hands-on and work closely with an experienced facilitator. Learning will be an action-based project, in which you'll gain confidence by working together. You'll also use a range on North Metropolitan TAFE technologies such as PCs and multifunction devices, withy all computers having access to the full Microsoft Office suit.

Short courses and skill sets

At North Metropolitan TAFE, we offer a variety of short courses and skill sets. Talk to us about how you can be involved or browse our comprehensive list of offerings. Application and enrolment information is included on individual course pages.

Our skill sets usually provide certification for specific workplace skills and are made up of one or more units of competency which link to an industry need or regulatory requirement, such as a licence. When you complete a skill set, you will receive a statement of attainment and in some cases this may count towards a higher qualification with further study.  Skill sets are usually identified in the course title.
